Good story, poor narration

To each, their own. However, for me, the narration on this is so disinterested, it sometimes seems like the narrator was in a trance. Quite often, she doesn't even account for punctuation, even obvious things that everyone will expect a similar vocal response, like a question mark.
I'm not looking for a theatrical read, but this is so bland, almost monotone, for my opinion, its quite difficult to listen to.

If you're reading book 9, nothing I say here is a spoiler.
I like the concept.
If I didn't, I wouldn't be on the 10th book.
Its a good story. The concept is great. The irreverent beer can, the Barny incident, the barrel of monkeys, and all that.

What I REALLY want to see is character development in Bishop.
If you agree with me, you know what I'm talking about, if not, no worries. I wrote this whole big thing, but you either already feel this way or you don't, so I didn't want to influence anyone with drawn own descriptions of how I see things.

That lack of character development in Bishop is why I give the story 3 stars.
Other than that, Great series.

This story takes a few different tropes and puts them together in a way that I think is unique. I don't want to give any spoilers, so I'll just say that its got scifi, alien, military, spy, and archeology with a little (lot) of sexy time tossed in. Definitely not for younger readers / listeners.
What I'm wondering is when the rest of the books in the series will be recorded for Audible, I'm disappointed that they aren't available... as well as other series by the Author like the "Ultra Human" series

This is a good concept, and the story develops well. The characters might be a little too good at what they're doing in the beginning, in my opinion, but I can also reason out how it could be justified, so its a minor complaint.

The character has what I'd consider reasonable resistance to the harem building idea, I mean, lets face it, building a harem does not come naturally to someone from our world.

My only issue with this story is the voice chosen for the main character. I imagine its difficult for a narrator to create multiple voices, but he seems to be gasping, out of breath, or weezing, while speaking for the main character, and its distracting, for me at least.

The world building in this book is good and detailed.
The story is interesting.
My issue is with the main character. She’s a whiny little .... To some extent, that’s fine, she’s 18, and raised in a remote area with no education beyond really idiotic wrote memorization of mystical crap, so it’s not a surprise that she doesn’t have much of a clue. But she never gets a clue, doesn’t learn. And one minute she’s worried about the entire world, the next a specific individual and to hell with everyone else...oh, and everything, absolutely everything, no matter what (so long as it’s bad) is her fault and responsibiiity. That crap gets old.

Miscommunication = story

Just about every story element hinges on intentional miscommunication.

Conveniently don't have enough time to talk about this or that.

Its really idiotic.

Overall the story is decent, it would just be nice if the author would come up with something other than the characters intentionally miscommunicating to develop the story.

This review has a slight spoiler, but it applies to the previous book as well, so I'm not sure if its really a spoiler.
The behavior of the characters is the same between the books and I suspect it will be the same in the next book.

The overall stories are good, but...

While I'm fine with the insane, unhinged, wacko, freakout, behavior of the guys ... not reasonable that just about every member of the team is that way, but ....there's some explanation for it in their background ...family and trauma and all that bull... If they freaked out once in a while, thats fine, but its all they do, freak out, behave unprofessionally, fail ..and conveniently set up drama...

I fully expect all of the books to have these supposedly highly professional individuals behaving completely unprofessionally any time its convenient for the plot. Would be nice to write the plot complications a different way.

We're far enough into the series that this comment doesn't count as a spoiler, but I'm not going to go into details anyway.

The overall idea of the universe is fine, I just wish there was some character growth, Joe might as well be one of Peter Pan's lost boys for all he grows. We expect that from Skippy, being the insufferable arrogant AI, but Skippy has more character arc than Joe. The problem with this is that it is no way reasonable and it takes me out of the story.

I am enjoying these books.
However, there are a few problems : slightly veiled spoilers

The author has instigated an incredibly short timeline in order to heighten suspense, in my opinion. I also consider it to be a lazy trope. It just makes things less reasonable and the main character behaves stupidly because of it. I would expect the guy to be dead in the first book, or early in this one, and he literally just keeps working himself into the ground day after day and week after week with no clue about anything, but inexplicably (inconvenient for the story) doesn’t cause him any issues at all.

The women are capable but are constantly written to be excluded, often all praise is laid on the guy, to the complete exclusion of the ladies who were instrumental and even critical, and the dickwad goes along with it...doesn’t say a word, doesn’t share the credit, and the ladies don’t bat an eye, seems out of character.

Overall enjoyable though

Micro management

For the most part, I enjoy this series, but there is a major flaw with it, and the genre in general. When you have a major character that is the captain of a ship, or worse, commander or admiral of several, that person simply can’t micro manage. They can’t call every single shot and every single maneuver and direct damage control and and and and and - to top it off, they can’t do all of that micro management while thinking that they think micro management isn’t good... might as well dump all of the officers on the ship, have one captain and a bunch of mid-shipmen - this is a starship captain genre problem, but it’s glaring in this series and distracting for me.
