Kind of like a long Twilight zone or Outer Limits episode run amok
Revisado: 04-17-25
The initial premise is intriguing but the story just gets weirder and weirder and not in a good way. The dialogue is very cliched and hackneyed. The voice the narrator used for the Hoag character was simply annoying.

dramatization of one of lovecraft's greatest stories
Revisado: 07-19-24
This is one of HP lovecraft's greatest horror stories, IMO, and this is an excellent dramatization. Even so, there's nothing like the original Lovecraft writing so you might want to read or listen on audible to the original story prior to listing to this dramatization.

Historia
On November 22, 1963, three shots rang out in Dallas, President Kennedy died, and the world changed. What if you could change it back? In this brilliantly conceived tour de force, Stephen King - who has absorbed the social, political, and popular culture of his generation more imaginatively and thoroughly than any other writer - takes listeners on an incredible journey into the past and the possibility of altering it.

ridiculously lengthy and corny
Revisado: 05-29-24
The interesting part of the book is the notion of going back in time to stop the assassination of JFK. But the book is two or three times longer than it should be because it is padded with all these other subplots, including one of the corniest romance stories I have ever read. The narrator is certainly competent but has the annoying habit of overemphasizing words that need not be emphasized. And if I heard the phrase "the past is obdurate" or "the past harmonizes" one more time, I probably would have hurled my mobile device against the wall. If you're interested in the Kennedy assassination, I highly recommend you read a variety of non-fiction books about that. If you're interested in books about time travel I highly recommend any other time travel book than this one.

Historia
Forty years ago Israeli psychologists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky wrote a series of breathtakingly original studies undoing our assumptions about the decision-making process. Their papers showed the ways in which the human mind erred systematically when forced to make judgments about uncertain situations. Their work created the field of behavioral economics, revolutionized Big Data studies, advanced evidence-based medicine, led to a new approach to government regulation, and made Michael Lewis' work possible.

seemed to be more a collection of biographical anecdotes then a coherent story
Revisado: 04-10-24
very disappointed in this work, I was interested in better understanding the work and theory of these two brilliant psychological economists but it just seemed like the author strung together every anecdote from each person's biography and after while I just gave up hope that there was any point to reading or listening to the rest of it

writing is at about a fourth grade reading level
Revisado: 03-27-24
The author has the amazing ability to bore me while describing horrible events, because the characters are so one-dimensional and the writing is so pedestrian. Reading (listening to) this, it is hard for me to believe that this is guy is such a best-selling author.

a failed novel
Revisado: 06-01-23
I am a huge fan of Shirley Jackson but I found this novel so unsatisfactory on so many levels. Much of it consists of seemingly endless family bickering, the only difference here being that some of the bickering is between multiple personalities of the same person. The troubled woman's aunt is unbearably unpleasant and her doctor is unbearably pompous. The only section of the book I liked was the one told from the point of view of the insane young woman. Usually, Shirley Jackson's stories and her later horror novels keep me on the edge of my seat. This one only kept me on the edge of my seat in that I kept wanting to get up and stop listening to it!

a remarkable book!
Revisado: 11-03-22
Charles Portis was a unique writer and this is one of his best. And the narration was a pleasure. He had a way of writing about the foibles of mankind that laced with very dry humor. There are elements of this book that actually remind me of Gogol, which I mean as a very high compliment.

Historia
The seven houses in these seven stories are empty. Some are devoid of love or life or furniture, of people or the truth or of memories. But in Samanta Schweblin’s tense, visionary tales, something always creeps back in: a ghost, a fight, trespassers, a list of things to do before you die, a child’s first encounter with a dark choice or the fallibility of parents.

Dr. Zasio also shares some of the most serious cases of hoarding that she’s encountered, and explains how we can learn from these extreme examples - no matter where we are on the hoarding continuum.

I'm interested in this topic but I found this book very uninformative. Full of repetitive anecdotes that made obvious points. A much better, more insightful book on hoarding is Stuff.

a wild shaggy dog tale, colorfully narrated
Revisado: 12-26-21
I got such a kick out of this book. The characters are delightfully eccentric, and the book really kicks into high gear when the protagonist crosses paths with a colorful con man known as Dr Symes (if this were a movie, Symes would be played by John Goodman). The narrator does a terrific job with voices and accents. Immediately upon the end of the book, I listened to the entire narrative all over again - That's how much I enjoyed it.
