Historia
Shari Franke’s childhood was a constant battle for survival. Her mother, Ruby Franke, enforced a severe moral code while maintaining a façade of a picture-perfect family for their wildly popular YouTube channel 8 Passengers, which documented the day-to-day life of raising six children for a staggering 2.5 million subscribers. But a darker truth lurked beneath the surface—Ruby’s wholesome online persona masked a more tyrannical parenting style than anyone could have imagined.

INCREDIBLE!!!!!!!!
Revisado: 07-06-24
One of my most favorite memoirs on childhood trauma. The writing was courageous, raw, poetic, and literary. As a visual artist and survivor of sexual abuse myself in a family where no one believed me, or wanted to acknowledge what happened, (even to this day), as a reader/listener, I felt as if this author was speaking to me directly and say…. I understand. 🩷🩷🩷

Meh
Revisado: 05-16-24
Great premise but the writing was unbearable. It felt like I was listening to an after school special. Too sappy, too many repeat words in one sentence, too many repeat concepts and descriptions too many adjectives. Feel like no one edited this book for the writer.

It was the last time anyone would see her alive. By the next day, Shanann and her two young daughters, Bella and Celeste, had been reported missing, and her husband, Chris Watts, was appearing on the local news, pleading for his family's safe return. But Chris Watts already knew that he would never see his family again. Less than 24 hours after his desperate plea, Watts made a shocking confession to police.

I love how John Glatt researches so many layers of each case. So far these are my most favorite true crime books. Specifically because of the thoughtfulness of the investigation, the fact that the crimes are solved, and the aftermath that is described. The only true crime books I appreciate just as much are those written by the victims themselves because they illustrate the human ability to survive. This is now my third book by John Glatt. The first was Lost Girls which was beyond amazing. If you like John Glatt, you will also appreciate the thoughtful discovery process of Josh Baker’s podcast “I’m Not a Monster.”

Historia
I was born and broken in Birkenhead, abused from infancy by a network of every kind of pervert from ‘thinks it’s love’ to ‘show it hurts’. I was unwanted, beaten, sold, swapped, photographed, filmed, left for dead, corrupted, blamed, betrayed, ignored and orphaned. But I was also born with a fire inside me. I call it my Phoenix Fire. I am no victim—that word only describes what happened to me. Nor am I a survivor because that implies I am over it. I am a Phoenix—a work in progress. This is my story....

Incredible!!!!!!
Revisado: 02-12-24
It’s a very painful book to get through. Shy Keenan tells her story with such honesty, grit and earthiness that I couldn’t stop listening. As a survivor of sexual abuse, it blew my mind in the most positive way. Sending out infinity hugs to you Shy and all who believed in you. You are right… being believed means everything as a child. I wasn’t believed either. I still am not by my parents. Thank god for others. On a different note, my heart breaks for the loss of your son. As a mother of sons there are no words to express my sadness for your loss. I am glad you didn’t let that terrible tragedy take you down as well. The world needs you. 🩷🩷🩷🩷

INCREDIBLE AND INSPIRING!!!!!
Revisado: 02-23-23
This is one of my most favorite books I have ever read in this genre. The sincerity, directness, poetic flow and triumph of Tori Johnson’s autobiography are etched in my mind and have helped me clarify parts of my own childhood trauma. This books has also given me pause about all of the years I have kept my own family secrets, the rage I feel towards my mother who turned the other cheek while I was being abused, called me a liar, and verbally abused me herself with constant talk about how disgusting woman’s bodies were. I have years of poetry and writing that I want to make public before she and my father die. So thank you vicTORIous!!!!!

Couldn’t stand the narrator. Prob wasn’t her fault. Just awful voices of the characters. And the story was a bit of a rip off of handmade’s tale. Just much less interesting. Also so much repetition of words. Just awful.
