Historia
Set in the 1860s, The Leopard tells the spellbinding story of a decadent, dying Sicilian aristocracy threatened by the approaching forces of democracy and revolution. The dramatic sweep and richness of observation, the seamless intertwining of public and private worlds, and the grasp of human frailty imbue The Leopard with its particular melancholy beauty and power, and place it among the greatest historical novels of our time.

Enlightening Read!
Revisado: 04-03-23
Excellent job of providing a slice of life during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s as Sicily lived through yet another political change. Paints a picture unlike simply offering a timeline or listing historic headlines could. I will say that doing a little study of Sicilian history before reading this will enhance it and give one much greater appreciation. Colorful characters that the author brought to life so well!

Historia
Where the Light Fell is a gripping family narrative set against a turbulent time in post-World War II America, shaped by the collision of Southern fundamentalism with the mounting pressures of the civil rights movement and '60s-era forces of social change. In piecing together his fragmented personal history and his search for redemption, Yancey gives testament to the enduring power of our hunger for truth and the possibility of faith rooted in grace instead of fear.

Moving Memoir
Revisado: 02-08-22
After hearing a delightful interview between Mr. Yancey and Jonathan Rogers on The Habit, I knew I must get this book. As a lifelong Southerner, I must have been living under a rock to only now discover Philip Yancey! This has to be among my favorite memoirs ever. The author will draw you into his story through well-crafted, detailed recollections of his boyhood, even more infused with life through the author’s gentle voice. There is a generation between us, yet I was stirred so many times with his coming of age descriptions of life in Georgia during the 60’s and 70’s. His raw, brutal honesty about himself and his early life leaves few questions unanswered about what an authentic, questioning, and developing faith and trust in God may look like. His college experiences and exposing his own shortcomings was captivating as well! His story, I pray, will serve as a map for others who have questions about their faith or God. I thought his comparison of the church to family—both composed of flawed, dysfunctional people, was on point. That’s a great perspective for us to remember as we’re tempted to judge either of these vital institutions, both important to our Heavenly Father. I absolutely adored the book and highly recommend it!!
