Historia
Phil Sundeen thinks Deputy Sheriff Kirby Frye is just a green local kid with a tin badge. And when the wealthy cattle baron's men drag two prisoners from Frye's jail and hang them from a high tree, there's nothing the young lawman can do about it. But Kirby's got more grit than Sundeen and his hired muscle bargained for. They can beat the boy and humiliate him, but they can't make him forget the oath he has sworn to uphold.

A Really Good Early Western Novel of Elmore Leonard

Classic Leonard, Amazing Narrator
Revisado: 09-30-21
It is hard to beat an Elmore Leonard western, but when you combine it with the exceptional narration of Richard Poe, it's like watching a movie in your mind.
Leonard's scene/perspective-based style, complex characters, and Poe's distinct voicing for each, allows the dialog attributions other literary distractions to disappear and the story to flow without any effort to keep up.
I will definitely be looking for more books with this combination.

Historia
At the opening of his third novel in an ongoing adventure series by Patrick O'Brian, Jack Aubrey is cruising off Cape Sicie when his friend Stephen Maturin (more serenely situated in Sussex) is informed of the Board's decision regarding Aubrey's prize money, taken after victorious engagement with a Spanish squadron at Cape Santa Maria. The money, five million pieces of eight, is not, as is the custom of war, to be divided among the crews of the four victorious vessels.

Best of the Series
Revisado: 10-12-20
Accepting Master and Commander, which can never be beat as the introduction to my two favorite characters in literature, this is one of the best of the series. The characters come to life under Patrick Tull's performance.

There's a reason We Are Legion was named Audible's Best Science Fiction Book of 2016: Its irresistibly irreverent wit! Bob Johansson has just sold his software company for a small fortune and is looking forward to a life of leisure. The first item on his to-do list: Spending his newfound windfall. On an urge to splurge, he signs up to have his head cryogenically preserved in case of death. Then he gets himself killed crossing the street. Waking up 117 years later, Bob discovers his mind has been uploaded into a sentient space probe with the ability to replicate itself.

Enjoyable but flawed.
Revisado: 10-18-16
For the first half of this book I was thinking, "man this is going to be great". The premise was exciting, the science was there, the main character was smart and funny, someone you could really root for, and the possibilities for adventure (or misadventure) seemed endless. Unfortunately, Dennis Taylor started pursuing far to many of them in this initial offering.
I am all for good sub-plots, especially in a series, but this one fails to establish a main plot-line against which the others can run, and there are far too many of them, at least seven by my count. I will give Taylor credit, he manages this large number well in terms of keeping the reader with him as he switches from sub-plot to sub-plot, but in the end, most of them turn out to be very superficial.
This feeling of incompleteness hits you square in the face when you reach the end of the book. Imagine reading a physical book you are genuinely enjoying, you seem to be about half way through when you reach the end of chapter. You turn the page excited to continue, but find the next 150 pages are blank, save for the message, "buy the next book."
I don't think I will be picking up the rest of this series, but I may looking for something else by this author.
