This book wasn’t always working for me

I really enjoy Kyle’s writings. This specific book was oddly difficult for me to get through. I pushed through to the finish. Upon reflection, I think it may have been the use of too many “first world” examples throughout including; executive coaches, coffee pot debates, popular movies/shows, wave pools, white-water rafting vacations, repeated social media examples, etc. It’s just not deep. At times, it feels simple and trite. It feels… easy. It feels… tired. Hoping for better next time.

I realize that Craig’s daughter has challenges with her illness. I appreciate that Craig’s wife lost her wedding ring for a bit. Has Craig faced any real hardship? What are we to make of pastors preaching about hardship who either (a) haven’t experienced hardship or (b) aren’t willing to share their own? I think this is a solid book. I hope it was more than an intellectual exercise for the author.

Max doesn’t share any of his own struggles. He mentions challenges with his book sales job FIFTY years ago. I think he can do a lot better than that. If you’re going to pick this topic, talk about anxiousness that you’ve either dealt with or struggled with yourself.
