Historia
A man. His ex-girlfriend's cat. A sadistic game show unlike anything in the universe: a dungeon crawl where survival depends on killing your prey in the most entertaining way possible. In a flash, every human-erected construction on Earth - from Buckingham Palace to the tiniest of sheds - collapses in a heap, sinking into the ground. The buildings and all the people inside have all been atomized and transformed into the dungeon: an 18-level labyrinth filled with traps, monsters, and loot.

Vulgar, regressive; listening anyway
Revisado: 12-01-24
Can I honestly say this is good or even okay? No. This has icky cruel torture porn vibes, in a bad way. It’s hard to identify redeeming social value here. Do I like the narration voice? Sorry, no; definitely wish there were a different narrator.
But did I immediately start the second book after finishing this book? Well, yes.

Historia
As Indigenous scientist and author of Braiding Sweetgrass Robin Wall Kimmerer harvests serviceberries alongside the birds, she considers the ethic of reciprocity that lies at the heart of the gift economy. How, she asks, can we learn from Indigenous wisdom and the plant world to reimagine what we value most? Our economy is rooted in scarcity, competition, and the hoarding of resources, and we have surrendered our values to a system that actively harms what we love. Meanwhile, the serviceberry’s relationship with the natural world is an embodiment of reciprocity.

I needed the allegory in the Matrix explained to me, thoroughly, scene by scene. This book met that need. Delightful. Necessary.

Grievance driven gossip
Revisado: 06-20-24
What even is this? Opinion? Gossip? Sensationalism? I wanted to like this because I was in the mood for something behind-the-scenes-y. Alas. I can’t recommend this to anyone. Ick. It’s got bias, it’s got racism, it’s got complaining about children, it’s got a superficial fixation on politeness forms. This is a pretty broken listen. 0/10 would not recommend.

Thoughtful episodic essays. Meditations on life and nature worth contemplating. There’s much to learn here about moss and its adaptations. And there’s much to learn about appreciating the beauty and intricacy of natural reality. I’m glad I listened to this one.

Historia
Nobody needs telling there isn’t enough time. We’re obsessed with our lengthening to-do lists, our overfilled inboxes, work-life balance, and the ceaseless battle against distraction; and we’re deluged with advice on becoming more productive and efficient, and “life hacks” to optimize our days. But such techniques often end up making things worse. The sense of anxious hurry grows more intense, and still the most meaningful parts of life seem to lie just beyond the horizon.

Deeply unsatisfying
Revisado: 06-21-22
It’s short. It’s an easy listen. It’s space. It’s well narrated.
But the story. Deeply unsatisfying. This has got some libertarian rules-are-bad don’t-consider-other-people vibe going on. Not sure what this was. I’m left… not satisfied. Science fiction is best when it explores how things might be different. This explored corporations breaking rules, acting lawlessly, taking by coercion, with no consequences, with a twinge of this behavior being admirable. I can get that from reality.
