a good capstone with an introduction to kanji
Revisado: 10-09-24
The series, though I stick to it at an irregular pace, has definitely helped me a lot with learning the language, though this book doescome with a PDF with reading lessons where you finally learn kanji by reading them out with different contexts and pronouncuations. That might give it a little value for people just wanting that introduction. (Reading lessons are all the way at the back of the book.)
The only real thing holding a higher rating back, though this is the first in the series to do it up until now, is about 3 phrases where they mismatched the translation and instruction, other than that, I recommend the series as a whole. Great for learning the language on a hike!

good book blown out of the water by a great performance
Revisado: 02-01-24
A gritty setting with a gravel chewing narrator where it does not feel exaggerated. The humor is a touch callous, but neutral. The setting makes a few points for anyone and a great many against everyone, faction wise, where the characters have to figure out their own moral compass, if they haven't already, as they are confronted with utter chaos and war from all sides, where hardly anyone feels 2 dimensional whether its Steady Ed's pilot, a panicked civillian or a nameless mechanic.
It is a type of setting you have to happen to like, but whether you like heavy warmachines feeling both immortal and vulnerable with a focus on the people within, or a thought through warlike sci fi setting that hardly ever monologues on its history while giving a steady stream of context, this book is for you and it deserves the love.
But. If you own the Brigador game? You probably already own it.

Entertaining and informative with a stilted pace
Revisado: 08-28-23
It was a brief but fun listen and it's about as entertaining as his youtube channel, but the snippets are also formatted like his youtube channel, making it less like a book and more like snippets of video without imagery, with little connecting the segments except for a period of silence that feels like the next video buffering on poor internet.
Still it is a worthwhile listen, worth the cost and I hope he will make some books dedicated to animals from a certain climate or region where it can be a little more expansive and flow better between segments/animals whilst giving him plenty material and direction to publish more books

Historia
Frank Herbert's Dune is one of the grandest epics in the annals of imaginative literature. Now Herbert's son, Brian, working with Kevin J. Anderson and using Frank Herbert's own notes, reveals a pivotal epoch in the history of the Dune universe: the Butlerian Jihad, the war that was fought ten thousand years before the events of Dune - the war in which humans wrested their freedom from "thinking machines."

It has some great moments-- But they are moments
Revisado: 07-26-23
Honestly, it wasn't all bad, but there are some cases of glaringly bad writing. Primarily, without going in detail: Every major staple of technology andthe Dune setting happens in a single year.
The book desperately tries to cling onto the idea it has to define how everything came to be in one book and it is distracting in the extreme. Literally a thousand years of stagnation and then in 365 days 5 people show up that made everything you know and love for a setting a thousand more years away, that don't let historians name their jihad but they themselves are so frenzied yet calm enough to name it.

Historia
It's a brave new Britain under the New Management. The avuncular prime minister is an ancient eldritch god of unimaginable power. Crime is plummeting as almost every offense is punishable by death. And everywhere you look, there are people with strange powers, some of which they can control, and some, not so much.

It's a decent story, but what does it add?
Revisado: 07-20-22
While the performance is perfectly fine, the book itself, like "Dead. Lies Dreaming" feels rather out of place from the rest of the laundry files. Yes, the threat might build up to something that may come back, and the ragtag gang of super powered pauper 'misfits' showing people who's boss might play a bigger part in the future, but there is no contact with elements of the Laundry in this Laundry Files Novel. We don't get to see how Bob, Mo or Alex and his girlfriend. It feels like the end of a major story that now has lost its goal or destination of the apocalypse and the attempts to delay it.

Historia
Bob Howard has been assigned to work with the Miyamoto Group, checking the wards that lock down Japan's warded sites - a task previously handled by his predecessor Dr. Angleton, the Eater of Souls. This mostly involves policing yokai: traditional magical beings, increasingly grown more annoying and energetic. But then Bob's simple trip turns into a deadly confrontation with the ultimate yokai. It's massively powerful. It's pink. And it says Hello.

Bob is back in what was once his series
Revisado: 07-20-22
And it's for a 2 hour long spin-off book.. Still, it was nice hearing more about the status of Bob and his issues that we've grown attached to. Where he was during one of the other books. The voice actor struggles with some Japanese words and it's a little silly to hear things like Nekomimi ears/cat ears ears, but with Bob's unfamiliarity of the language that at least somewhat makes sense. The meat puppets of Quantum Dreams and the necronomicon of the book before with the ragtag gang were mildly entertaining albeit a bit.. Forcibly random and it did not feel like it added anything to the greater plot as a whole, feeling like diversions. And while this is a little spin-off book, hearing about the status of a major entity in the setting somehow feels more impactful and makes me wish for more, since the series had me hooked on the Laundry Files, and other books in the series were still tied to it, this feels like a small little comeback to that.

A good story with the wrong voice actor
Revisado: 06-30-19
While I have enjoyed the story quite a bit, with a solid ending, good writing that gives clear images yet leaves enough to the imagination, but the voice actor... While Marc is hard to replace, it makes sense for a new narrator, and generally she even has more intonation, but the biggest flaw I find is the voices she uses for 80% of the characters, as though she voices this aged 60 year old man like the kid with a sore throat in any nickelodeon cartoon, and it can get very distracting
