Historia
In The Collapse of Parenting, Leonard Sax, an acclaimed expert on parenting and childhood development, identifies a key problem plaguing American children, especially relative to other countries: the dramatic decline in young people's achievement and psychological health. The root of this problem, Sax contends, lies in the transfer of authority from parents to their children, a shift that has been occurring over the last 50 years and is now impossible to ignore.

Some values are almost timeless and it is good to preserve them through education
Revisado: 01-04-24
I am European so some of the cultural references and the context as well as tips are irrelevant (but not incomprehensible) to me. I have a 1.5 years old daughter so it is hard to say how I will fare in educating her later on. While some of the author’s views are conservative and outdated for us younger people, I felt that especially the last section on teaching values and what really matters in life was in line with my liberal views, because talking to your kids about (your) values is really useful for them to reflect on their own life purpose. Really interesting that there is a bigger diagnosis of mental disease in the US than in other developed countries. Personally I feel that our purpose as parents is to raise independent people not to teach them our culture as the author states in reference to the degrading standards of children’s attitudes in the US. But overall I think the message is genuine and positive: children deserve to have clear rules and models in their parents. I don’t think video games or smartphones are inherently problematic for teens and later. It’s how you talk about them. This book was free on audible when I listened to it.

Historia
People from all walks of life call 911 when things go bad. These are their stories, told by the people who respond and make things better. First responders often don't tell stories, preferring to keep what happens at work private. Rescue Captain Michael Morse changes that with these heartfelt descriptions of hundreds of emergency calls, with the usual coverings peeled back, exposing the bizarre, heartbreaking, and often hilarious reactions to 911 emergencies.

Decent book of vignettes
Revisado: 10-28-23
The stories in the book are told from the point of view of an experienced firefighter. They are randomly placed in the book with little connection one to another, I would have liked to see them grouped, for example by type of intervention or patient, but I guess this grouping might reflect real life - you never know what you’re going to get. The issue is that it’s hard to keep track or be interested - most of the times the story of the persons described is not known past the intervention. As a progressive European I did not care for (but understood it as a cultural phenomenon) for the right-wing politica of the narrator. For example I am confused why he believed that telling a young girl that she will break a lot of hearts should be a comment that is affirming and life-changing for her, as the narrator believes it to be. Respect for this very difficult line of work. I would have loved to hear more about their protocols and learned more, but this was not a book about being a firefighter, it was a firefighter’s personal history of his work.
