Historia
Jinger, along with three of her sisters, wrote a New York Times bestseller about their religious convictions. She believed this level of commitment would guarantee God's blessing, even though in private she felt constant fear that she wasn't measuring up to the high standards demanded of her.

This book is truthful, enlightening and full of grace.
Revisado: 02-11-23
I watched the Dugger family on television with fascination. How do you manage a home with 19 children? I grew to have a genuine interest and concern for each of the children, especially the older group as they married and started families of their own. I was amazed that parents could have such a strong influence over their children into adulthood. Jinger’s book helps me to see that it was the teaching of Bill Gothard that instilled fear that caused this level of absolute obedience. Although not the main focus of the book, it helps to understand why Jinger’s older brother Josh grew to lead a double life. I pray he will also repent of his sin and discover the God of the Bible and the amazing love of Jesus as Jinger has.
In a day where so many people are deconstructing the faith they were introduced to as children, I pray that like Jinger, they will do the hard work of disentangling instead. Rather than walking away in heartbreak and disappointment, allow the One who loves you so much that He sent His Son to live a perfect life and die the death that you and I deserve, reveal Himself to you in His Word and heal your hurts. What love! What grace! Discover truth for yourself. Do not let prideful, deceitful people tell you what to believe. By they way, we are all prideful and deceitful and left to our own devices will manipulate to get what we want. Many of us just have not had the opportunity.
It is clear that Jinger’s parents introduced and utilized Gothard’s teaching in their home and this is why she became entangled in the first place. However, she is so gracious in the book towards them. She expresses her love and appreciation for all they have done right instead of blaming them for leading her into false teaching. As a parent of adult children, my prayer is that my children will also see my heart’s desire to do the very best for them and extend grace where I messed up. Jinger does this so well.
Thanks for telling your story Jinger. I pray with you that this book will help others to separate truth from lies from teachings they’ve been exposed to and walk away with a living, growing faith.

Historia
Years ago, Martin cracked open his Bible and began wrestling with a few fundamental questions. He asked, “What if every single word of Scripture is absolutely true and I can trust it? How do I respond? Something in me should change, but what? How?” This audiobook is the result of that exploration. Writing as our guide, he uses a storyteller’s imagination to illuminate key moments from the Scriptures, primarily from the life and ministry of Jesus. In addition, Martin shares key moments from his own journey as a disciple - and bondservant - of Christ and a mentor to others.

The best of Charles Martin
Revisado: 09-27-20
I chose this book because Charles Martin is my all time favorite author. His books are always thoughtful, deep and soul searching. I also am a person of faith and it hasn’t always been easy. I think that is one thing Charles Martin wants us to know. A faith that is real will cause you to put every area of your life under the microscope of truth. Whether you are new to the faith or you’ve been on a life long journey of faith, this book will challenge you to let the Spirit of God do His good work in you. Through your circumstances, diagnosis’, relationships, temptations and pain, God wants to use it all to reveal a new aspect of Himself to you. He wants to use the good stuff too, but somehow we (I) just do not search for Him as much when things are going good. Charles Martin leads us on a journey of evaluating ourselves in the light of the Word by the power of the Spirit. If you allow it, the journey through this book will change you, for God’s glory and your good.

Historia
Why we think it’s a great listen: Some books are meant to be read; others are meant to be heard – Water for Elephants falls into the second group, and is one of the best examples we have of how a powerful performance enhances a great story. Nonagenarian Jacob Jankowski reflects back on his wild and wondrous days with a circus. It's the Depression Era and Jacob, finding himself parentless and penniless, joins the Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth.

Great Story.....horrible language!
Revisado: 04-27-15
Would you try another book from Sara Gruen and/or David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones ?
Sadly, no. I loved the story overall but the excessive use of foul language & explicit sexual descriptions were so offensive that I would not try another book from this author.
What other book might you compare Water for Elephants to and why?
I have not read any other books similar to this one.
What about David LeDoux and John Randolph Jones ’s performance did you like?
I completely enjoyed the performances of David LeDoux & John Randolph. They were authentic & believable.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Water for Elephants?
If I were an editor, I would cut all of the sexually explicit scenes. They were unnecessary to the overall story & added crudeness to an otherwise lovely story.
