Historia
This is Jim Hart's story: how he survived a violent childhood home, how he overcame obsessive dependencies, and how he finally found the strength to be his true self. A master at building relationships, Jim is charming, funny, and a great listener. His success in life and business was based on his ability to connect with others, from people recovering in 12-step groups in upstate New York to those living in the rarefied air of Martha's Vineyard.

A heartfelt examination of a man's life
Revisado: 05-22-17
What made the experience of listening to Lucky Jim the most enjoyable?
His candor and honest self-appraisal as he sees it.
Who was your favorite character and why?
The author. He had a lot to say and didn't pull punches.
Did Pete Cross do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?
Pete did a good job narrating and differentiating, but, and this is subjective, I couldn't picture Jim Hart in my mind.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes
Any additional comments?
Well written book, a cri de coeur. Jim's going inward and examining who he is and who he is becoming was not an easy write, nor done to garner sympathy. What he found out about himself in his life experiences and how he shared about this marks a courageous man. I also found that recovery... even after some 21 yrs is fragile. Also, once again it is pointed out to me the road to perdition via opioids is much easier for some than others. Finally, the old saw about an "unexamined life" once again demands attention. One's life can be examined, but one needs do this w/a deep degree of honesty and an understanding that this examination is a continuous endeavor. In analyzing life, feelings must be recognized, examined, felt, articulated... even prayed over before being acted upon. Jim shows this and articulates it well. He has learned a great deal about himself and relationships; I felt this book was really more an ongoing chapter in his life and more, much more will continue to be revealed.

Tedious
Revisado: 05-21-17
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?
Had the author not attempted to use a stilted 19th Century English and the narrator not employed a British accent that seemed to drift into an American accent from time to time.
Has The Curse of the Blue Scarab turned you off from other books in this genre?
No
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Alexander Masters?
I don't think the narrator was at fault as much as the style of writing trying to be Victorian and Alexander trying to plough through the story attempting to use speech in the manner of that period.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment.
Any additional comments?
I am a real fan of Josh Lanyon. I hope this was an experiment he doesn't repeat.

Waste of time
Revisado: 05-21-17
Would you try another book from Charlie Cochet and/or Mark Westfield?
NO!
Has Smoke & Mirrors turned you off from other books in this genre?
I believe it has.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Mark Westfield?
Just about anybody.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
Yes, how not to write or narrate a book.
Any additional comments?
If I could give this a -1 star I would. I found it to be a very long co-dependent relationship btw two people w/an almost zero story.

Historia
1936 was a great year for the movie industry - the financial setbacks of the Great Depression were subsiding, so theater attendance was up. Americans everywhere were watching the stars, and few stars shined as brightly as one of America's most enduring screen favorites, Mary Astor. But Astor's personal story wasn't a happy one. Born poor and widowed at 24, Mary Astor had spent years looking for stability when she met and wed Dr. Franklyn Thorpe.

Courtroom Drama
Revisado: 01-03-17
Enjoyed this book very much. To add to your enjoyment suggest you read Woody Allen's review in The NY Times. Tho the story involves Mary Astor's life, the meat of the story is how important the diaries were in her child custody case and the uproar they caused in Hollywood's Golden era. Book is well written with asides on various celebrities of the mid-1930's. If you are looking for a gossipy tell all, you may be somewhat disappointed, but as a fine human interest story and picture of that era you will be entertained. The courtroom aspect is intriguing and well told and is the center of the story.
Bernadette Dunn does a fine job narrating and really helps draw the listener in.
Good job, nicely written and researched.

Historia
First published in 1905, The Varieties of Religious Experience is a collection of lectures given at the University of Edinburgh in 1901 and 1902. William James was a psychologist and, as such, his interest in religion was not that of a theologian but of a scientist. In these 20 lectures, he discusses the nature and origin of religious belief. The average believer is one who has inherited his religion, but this will not do for James's inquiry.

Dense & Insightful
Revisado: 10-20-16
This series of lectures in the parlance of today can really be called, "Varieties of Spiritual Experiences". James' use of language is very stilted and formal by today's standard. This distracted from my listening as James seems to get lost in language and verbosity. I found myself often saying, " simplify, please get to the point". This being said, it is a deep, expressive and thoughtful book, by a sincere and sensitive man of deep intellect. A pedagogue at heart, his desire to take the reader/listener thru his thought process and personal seeking is sincere and enlightening.
John Pruden's reading is superb and showed his interest in James' work and never once did I get the feeling he was slogging thru a performance. Kudos to him.
This is not a one time book to listen to (or read) but to be reviewed and thought about over time with several (and patient) reviews. One's spiritual insight will be well rewarded.
