Historia
Elizabeth I is one of England's most famous monarchs, whose story as the ‘Virgin Queen' is well known. But queenship was by no means a certain path for Henry VIII's younger daughter, who spent the majority of her early years as a girl with an uncertain future. Before she was three years old Elizabeth had been both a princess and then a bastard following the brutal execution of her mother, Anne Boleyn.

Amazing!
Revisado: 03-28-24
You are left with the greatest respect and admiration of Elizabeth. I have read many books on the Tudors and Elizabeth herself, so I was intrigued to see if this new take on her life before she became queen, could add more than I already knew.
I was not disappointed! Although the events of her childhood, the ordeal of her years under Edward and Mary are well known, Nicola Tallis brings it to life in a way I haven’t seen before.
The book is beautifully written and the narrator does a wonderful job telling the story. Even though the history is familiar, the events - especially under the reign of Mary - are laid out so that you cannot put the book down.
For everyone who is interested in the Tudors this book is a must! Even if you think you’ve read it all, please give it a go anyway. You will not be disappointed.
I shared Nicolas Tallis’ admiration of Elizabeth before, but after listening to the book, I am even more in awe of this incredible woman.

Historia
Written with an exciting combination of narrative flair and historical authority, this interpretation of the tragic life of Catherine Howard, fifth wife of Henry VIII, breaks new ground in our understanding of the very young woman who became queen at a time of unprecedented social and political tension and whose terrible errors in judgment quickly led her to the executioner's block.

The best non-fiction Tudor History book in a long time
Revisado: 06-29-22
I was sceptical of this book, because of some less positive reviews here. As an avid listener/reader of Tudor non-fiction I was - however - not disappointed.
As a matter of fact this may be one of the best non-fiction books on Tudor History I have read/listened to in a very long while and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
The author paints a detailed and vivid image of the Tudor court and - not least - the people in it. Buildings, people and events were brought to life in a way I haven’t experienced in non-fiction before and I really feel that I got to know, feel and perhaps even experience this long gone era in a different way.
If you have any interest in Tudor history and you are into non-fiction then do yourself the favour and read/listen to this book.
I cannot recommend it enough!

Historia
Each Tudor monarch made their name with a Dudley by their side - or by crushing one beneath their feet. The Dudleys thrived at the court of Henry VII but were sacrificed to the popularity of Henry VIII. Rising to prominence in the reign of Edward VI, the Dudleys lost it all by advancing Jane Grey to the throne over Mary I. Under Elizabeth I, the family were once again at the centre of power and would do anything to remain there. With three generations of felled favourites, what was it that caused this family to keep rising so high and falling so low?

This magnificent biography of Henry VIII is set against the cultural, social and political background of his court - the most spectacular court ever seen in England - and the splendour of his many sumptuous palaces. An entertaining narrative packed with colourful description and a wealth of anecdotal evidence, but also a comprehensive analytical study of the development of both monarch and court during a crucial period in English history.

I loved this book! I have read/listened to many books on Tudor history - and especially those by Alison Weir, but this one stands out.
If you feel you are already very familiar with the life of Henry and the story of his wives this is a must. It gives a detailed glimpse into the life of his court and his private life. It’s a fascinating journey through his castles, his world and the people who surrounded him.
It’s one of those books that I wish would never end. And here it was brought to life by Phyllida Nash with her soothing voice and wonderful British accent.

The New York Times best-selling author of The Six Wives of Henry VIII and The War of the Roses, historian Alison Weir crafts fascinating portraits of England’s infamous House of Tudor line. Here Weir focuses on Elizabeth I, also known as the Virgin Queen, who ascended to the throne at age 25 and never married, yet ruled for 44 years and steered England into its Golden Age.
