Historia
Tom Smith used to be somebody. Now he's just another refugee, fleeing the smoking ruins of civilization. Tom and some trusted allies were able to stay one step ahead of the infected humans and escaped offshore. Now they're holed up in a safe house in coastal Virginia and it's time to break out. Between him and his objective, one of the bank's prepared evacuation camps in the Cumberland Valley, are hundreds of miles of clogged roads, burnt-out towns, and howling mobs of infected humans who know only hunger.

Well...that wasn't good.
Revisado: 04-08-20
For a zombie apocalypse book, there wasn't much in the way of zombies. It was mostly being introduced to characters you'd want to shoot who weren't zombies. Whether they were being too stupid to live, too Machiavellian, too PC, or just your standard "bad guy, one each", following Tom's flight to the Blue Site was a trial for the reader as much as it was for Tom.
In the 1st arc of the series, most of the too-stupid-to-survive-types are surrounded by competent people digging in and carrying their dead weight. In this installment, the ratio is shifted. In addition, a Soviet-style ruling class tries to take over the Blue Site before Tom even gets there.
My problem with this book mainly lies with the number of times I'm asked to suspend my disbelief for a weird concept, plot point, or due to some inconsistent character action / dialogue. I was given characters with minimal background and my imagination filled in the rest...fine...but then the characters did things contrary to the background I was given. The repeated jarring moments were frustrating.
If you were a fan of the 1st arc of this series, I'd recommend passing on this disappointing 2nd arc. The entertaining banter between characters is missing. The development of the characters is minimal. The overall story is...not good.
On the plus-side...Tristan Morris does an excellent job. His consistency is what kept me going until the end.
The APPENDIX at the end was the best part of the book.

No. There is one other thing they can do: hit the enemy so hard that the aliens will regret they ever heard of humans.

Gagh! Cliffhanger ALERT!!!
Revisado: 04-07-20
The last 30 minutes of this book will blow your mind!...and then you'll be turned into a zombie merely by the voice of Mr. Bray and scream, not for brains, but for the next book!
If you've been following in this audible journey and are wondering whether to continue with book #9, you shouldn't even need to ask. R.C. Bray continues to bring the awesomeness to "Valkyrie", and Mr. Alanson spins a mighty yarn that leaves you wondering how the pirates will get out of this one.
If you're thinking of starting here, do yourself a favor and start at the beginning. But make sure you've got enough credits to get ALL the books because you will become addicted to the way R.C. Bray reads this tale.
It's a great story with only the one downside already mentioned...the cliffhanger. I won't take stars away in this case because the book is almost 20 hours long and I got more than my credit's worth. Instead, I'll consider it a regular ending, with a sneak peek and be glad I got that last 30 minutes. I could spend the next 5 months internalizing the ramifications. So by the time I'm done, the next book will be available.
Another great addition to the Skippy-verse!!!

Wow...that was bad.
Revisado: 04-07-20
I made the mistake of not looking at the reviews. Why would I? It was a new MHI book and I was eager for another Larry Correia hit narrated by Oliver Wyman! Not so fast...because neither of those things happened.
If Larry actually wrote ANY of this, I would be shocked. None of his characters were consistent with the previous books...heck, some were bi-polar within THIS book. Julie whipsawed between vengeful mama bear to whiney, angsty teen who's lost all focus.
The narrator would do great in the romance genre, but not here. The whiney tendencies Julie portrays are boosted to 11 by this narrator. I had to skip forward multiple times to get the 'fingernails on a chalkboard' sound out of my head.
Save your credit! The story-arc doesn't move at all. No major plot points are added or closed. Think of this as a side-story that, if you're intent on reading, would be better via kindle than audible.

Oh Yeah! The War is ON!
Revisado: 05-01-19
I've been waiting a long time for this to come out on audio, but it's finally here!
Well written and narrated, these are the "episodes" that launch the long anticipated war. A whole lot of space combat, ground fighting, strategy...it's like Princess Bride in space (not really). The Archons finally go up against the long anticipated superior opponents. It will take smarts, guile, and determination to win...but can they win?
As with all his books, you'll get a few questions answered and a whole new set to replace them. It's one of the reasons I've stuck around so long with the series. I HATE paying for books that always promise closure in the NEXT book, without closing any plot threads. Whether he's tying off a thread or creating a whole batch of new ones, you get your credit's worth.
I followed the narrator on Twitter, and won free Audible promo codes during a drawing he had when he released his last book. @StephenDayNr8or. Feel free to send me some more for the amazing review! Oh, and great work BTW! You've got a really solid rhythm to your narration. Seriously got goose-bumps during some of the fight scenes.
I wonder how long the war will rage? I'm betting...a while.

Entertaining!
Revisado: 06-13-18
Turn your brain off and enjoy the ride. Not a book dominated by techno-speak or long-winded character development. A straight-forward military sci-fi with enough of both to enjoy the story, but not so much that the story gets lost.

Historia
In the three years since former fleet officer Rob Geary and former marine Mele Darcy led improvised forces to repel attacks on the newly settled world of Glenlyon, tensions have only gotten worse. When one of Glenlyon's warships is blown apart trying to break the blockade that has isolated the world from the rest of human-colonized space, only the destroyer Saber remains to defend it from another attack. Geary's decision to take Saber to the nearby star Kosatka to safeguard a diplomatic mission is a risky interpretation of his orders, to say the least.

Revisado: 06-13-18
At first I wasn't expecting much from this series, but I've been thoroughly impressed. It's been fun looking for connections between this series and his others, not to mention the story is outstanding!
My only complaint is that my time machine is busted and I can't jump into the future to get the next one now. Dang flux capacitors!

I loved Bray's performance..the story? not so much
Revisado: 06-13-18
I'm a big RC Bray fan, and grabbed this book simply because he read it. He didn't disappoint. The story, however, was not my cuppa'.
The way the author treated his protagonists was a bit Game of Thrones-ian...kill them off just as the reader develops an emotional connection. Sure, the shock effect can be effective in a genre like this, but at the end I was left feeling like I'd wasted several hours with nothing to show for it.
It's also obviously going to be several books longer, and now I don't have any interest in seeing how things turn out for the characters left.

I'm curious to see if/how the series continues.
