Revisado: 11-20-24
I loved this book. I listen to his podcast (The Exorcist Files) which is excellent (and super intense) and so I was familiar with most of the cases he writes about in this book, but it was really good to hear more about what kinds of things lead to these sorts of problems for people and how God’s power and love rescues people from this kind of distress through the ministry of the Church. If anything, he makes it very hard to ignore the fact that spiritual warfare is a very real thing and that people ignore, deny, or reject God and the faith at their own peril. He is also quick to point out that God is always ready to help those who realize that they need his help and are willing to ask for it.

Please help the narrator with pronouncing words correctly
Revisado: 10-05-24
I loved this book, and I mostly enjoyed the narrator, except she mispronounces lots of words. You might not notice if you are not Catholic or don’t have a theological background, but after awhile, it gets really distracting that words like apostolate, dioceses, names like Origin and Augustine, and quite a few more are not pronounced correctly.

Awesome book until the asinine twist at the end
Revisado: 08-13-24
I was totally into this book until the plot twist at the end, which ruined the entire book for me. It’s entirely implausible and seems to be there for no reason other than to be edgy or push an agenda (another reviewer said this same thing.) it would have been a great story in its own right without the twist.

I really wanted to like this—I really really did
Revisado: 06-26-24
I found most of the story to be interesting, and I get that the Templar aspect of it lends itself to this kind of a plot, but I got got pretty tired of the heavy handed Dan Brown conspiracy theory element; if you like the History Channel’s sensational nonsense about the Bible, this will be right up your alley. But I found it to be a pretty tired rehash of the power hungry Catholic Church trying to suppress and hide the “real truth” trope. This just wasn’t my cup of tea.

Historia
In the first book of this brilliant series, Stephen King introduces listeners to one of his most powerful creations: Roland of Gilead, The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which frighteningly mirrors our own, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

First timers who didn’t like it should give it a second listen
Revisado: 01-01-18
Lots of people criticize this for being too slow, too weird, too nonsensical, etc. But in my opinion, you have to take into account that that this is the first of several books in a saga. Moreover, this is more literary in nature and requires you to think—it’s not something you should expect to be a “one and done” kind of book. It’s richly layered, and for people who criticize it for being too descriptive or slow because of its literary elements, keep in mind that part of the beauty of this book is its language, imagery, and allusions.
It seems that some people don’t like to linger over language nor do they like to exert the effort to understand or appreciate texts that aren’t immediately obvious or straightforward in their meaning. Maybe I’m different because I spent a lot of time studying and teaching literary works. But I will say that the first time i read this, i felt like a lot of people...it was just weird. But after coming back to the novel again after a few years, I was really enthralled by how deeply layered, carefully wrought, and enchanting the story is.

Good story, lacking narrator
Revisado: 08-10-17
What did you love best about Thunderhead?
Bill Smithback!
What did you like best about this story?
Preston and Child are great at building tension and knowing when and how to leave characters and storylines hanging to keep you invested in the plot.
What three words best describe Scott Brick’s voice?
In this particular book: indifferent, flat, and dull.
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
Not going to drop spoilers, but I really enjoyed watching Nora's relationship with Smithback evolve.
Any additional comments?
While I enjoy Preston and Child's storytelling, I was not especially fond of Scott Brick's narration in this particular instance. This is the kind of story that is intense and gripping, and Brick's narration is a mismatch here. It was really hard to get into the story at first because the narration is so quiet and reserved.

Moderately engaging, but wish there was more to it
Revisado: 07-07-17
What does Corey M. Snow bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I think that the narrator's performance helped make a mediocre story feel more worthwhile.
Any additional comments?
This is my first experience with this author, and to be honest, I wasn't particularly impressed with this book. The subplots don't do a very good job supporting or complementing the main narrative, one of them feels like it's there to kind of set up the ending, but the other one feels like it doesn't really belong in the novel, because it has little impact on the primary action driving the story. I also felt a little cheated by the ending, in the sense that the "payoff" you expect to get doesn't really feel earned. Another reviewer said that this book is like if you were watchingJurassic Park and waiting to see the dinosaurs and they only show up in the last 15 minutes of the movie. I think that's a pretty fair explanation of why this book just didn't work for me.
