Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Beautiful portrait of a neighborhood, but boring story and no character growth
Revisado: 05-20-24
Basically the title. I think McBride's prose in describing this mixed Jewish-black neighborhood is beautiful, but the story is meandering, mostly boring, and sometimes nonsensical (why does the state want to take possession of a deaf black boy so badly? why does Malachi buy a bakery when he knows nothing about baking?). Also, although his characters are vivid in their description, they are shallow and experience no character growth over the course of the story. They also lack nuance, with the primary villain Doc being a charicature with no redeeming qualities. Overall, I would not recommend this book unless you love slice-of-life stories about a certain time and place and don't care about story or character nuance and growth.

The master at his scarifying best! From heart-pounding terror to the eeriest of whimsy - tales from the outer limits of one of the greatest imaginations of our time! Trucks that punish and beautiful teen demons who seduce a young man to massacre; curses whose malevolence grows through the years; obscene presences and angels of grace - here, indeed, is a night-blooming bouquet of chills and thrills.

Fun collection of varied stories
Revisado: 03-19-24
It's a pretty eclectic collection of stories. Some are long, some are short, some are powerful and haunting, some are sweet, and some are forgettable. They span lots of settings and tones, so there's something for everyone, but but there's also bound to be a few you don't like. Great value though, for one credit you get 22 hours of Stephen King voiced by some great voice actors (including King himself).

Historia
While running in Central Park, New York Times science writer Damon Ellis crashes—literally—into a story that just might resurrect his career…and change the course of human history. On the face of it, it seems absurd—a small biotech company in Boston called Calypso that claims to have cracked the secret of eternal youth. Surely a hoax. Or is it?

Bad writing, great production value
Revisado: 12-01-23
I don't understand the super high ratings. The voice acting and production value is excellent, with a large ensemble cast, but the writing is terrible. Most of the main characters are unlikeable and make non-sensical decisions in order to drive the story. The plot has lots of twists and turns, but a lot of them don't make sense and seem designed to create cheap suspense without adding to a coherent story. I kept listening in the hope that the next reveal would tie things together, but the final explanation was pretty unsatisfying.

Hilarious and fun
Revisado: 01-24-22
This book had me cracking up the whole time. It's clever and witty and plays off super hero tropes well, but doesn't take itself too seriously.

Historia
In 2017, a routine network television investigation led to a story only whispered about: one of Hollywood’s most powerful producers was a predator, protected by fear, wealth, and a conspiracy of silence. As Farrow drew closer to the truth, shadowy operatives, from high-priced lawyers to elite war-hardened spies, mounted a secret campaign of intimidation, threatening his career, following his every move, and weaponizing an account of abuse in his own family.

Everyone needs to read this
Revisado: 11-06-21
This book unfolds more like a spy novel, but everything in it is 100% true and actually happened. It not only exposes the crimes of Harvey Weinstein, Matt Lauer, and other men in power, but also the institutions and practices (some super secret) that allowed them to continue for so long. Worth reading for anyone interested in not only these issues, but also understanding how the world works behind the scenes.

Spectacular voice cast, cute story
Revisado: 07-24-21
This is more of a children's book, but still entertaining for adults. I'd compare it to Coraline in terms of style, but totally different subject. The voice acting is superb and really adds a lot to it, I recommend getting the audiobook version if you can.

Entertaining Green Beret stories from Vietnam
Revisado: 07-11-21
Really well done. The author is hilarious and entertaining, but also tells some serious and some poignant tales from his time in Vietnam. Only some of the stories feature combat, while many are slice of life tales from living with his unit, which was full of hellraisers.

Historia
One Christmas Eve in a small hollow in Boone County, West Virginia, struggling songwriter Jesse Walker witnesses a strange spectacle: seven devilish figures chasing a man in a red suit toward a sleigh and eight reindeer. When the reindeer leap skyward, taking the sleigh, devil men, and Santa into the clouds, screams follow. Moments later, a large sack plummets back to earth, a magical sack that thrusts the down-on-his-luck singer into the clutches of the terrifying Yule Lord, Krampus.

You'll never look at Yule season the same
Revisado: 11-21-20
Loved everything about this book, from the characters to the story to the world building to the voice acting of the narrator. I don't want to spoil any parts of the story, so I'll just say it revolves around some humans struggling with their own life problems until they unwittingly get tangled up in a war between Santa Claus and a much older Yule spirit named Krampus, neither of which is exactly what you'd expect.

Historia
In a country teetering on the brink of civil war, two young people meet - sensual, fiercely independent Nadia and gentle, restrained Saeed. They embark on a furtive love affair, and are soon cloistered in a premature intimacy by the unrest roiling their city. When it explodes, turning familiar streets into a patchwork of checkpoints and bomb blasts, they begin to hear whispers about doors - doors that can whisk people far away, if perilously and for a price. As the violence escalates, Nadia and Saeed decide that they no longer have a choice.

Didn't do enough with the premise
Revisado: 08-27-20
The premise of a world where magical doors connect countries and make borders gradually irrelevant was interesting, but I feel like the author didn't explore it much and instead focused on the mundane relationship between the two major characters. That's fine, but I found that relationship somewhat boring and I don't see why you introduce a major piece of magic if you're barely going to use it.
