Historia
Perturabo - master of siegecraft and the executioner of Olympia. Long has he lived in the shadow of his more favoured primarch brothers, frustrated by the mundane and ignominious duties which regularly fall to his Legion. When Fulgrim offers him the chance to lead an expedition in search of ancient and destructive xenos weaponry, the Iron Warriors and the Emperor's Children unite and venture deep into the heart of the great star maelstrom that haunts Perturabo's dreams.

Worst Book in the Series
Revisado: 05-02-25
Not all books in the Horace Heresy series are as good as others, but until this one I could say that I thoroughly enjoyed them all. The story promises a lot, meanders through insignificant details, blows a whole bunch of stuff up, goes nowhere and lands nowhere. As a 40-page short story it could have been okay, but as a full-length novel it is a total waste of time.

Historia
Created in the Emperor's own image, the primarchs had long thought themselves to be princes of the universe and masters of their own destiny - they led the Space Marine Legions in glorious conquest of the galaxy, and no enemy of the Imperium could stand against them. However, even amongst this legendary brotherhood, the seeds of dissent had been sown long before the treacherous Warmaster Horus declared his grand heresy.

From Disappointing to Terrible
Revisado: 01-11-25
More from factions we've already got a lot of story from already and mostly not about the Primarchs of them anyway. Moves the overall plot of HH zero inches forward. Starts with a Fulgrim story that was pretty good, but the Iron Hands and Dark Angels stories that followed were completely forgettable. Unless you like the sound of the word "Xalmagundi" and want to hear a lot about an expendable non-Space Marine psyker by that name, the last of the four stors is completely useless, if not outright annoying.

A feel good tale
Revisado: 11-19-24
A short & fast paced nostalgia trip without too much complexity, but not so simplistic as to be uninteresting. Character insights and internals were not surprising, but well executed and consistent with the general sense of Anakin and Obiwan that so many previous have given us. Moreover, this story was one of the better vehicles for elaborating on their personalities and challenges. Although meant for younger audiences, approached with proper expectations, this should be an enjoyable tale for fans of the Prequel Trilogy Era.

Historia
Since its original publication by Little, Brown and Company, in 1942, Edith Hamilton's Mythology has sold millions of copies throughout the world and established itself as a perennial best-seller in its various available formats. Mythology succeeds like no other audiobook in bringing to life for the modern listener the Greek, Roman, and Norse myths and legends that are the keystone of Western culture - the stories of gods and heroes that have inspired human creativity from antiquity to the present.

Stands the test of time
Revisado: 02-25-24
An excellent survey of Greek mythology with great care taken to consult and construct the versions within based on their ancient historical sources. Individual stories all have scholarly and entertainment treatments elsewhere, but as for a collection that attempts something of both, Edith Hamilton's success here is unmatched and continues to stand the test of time.

Historia
Hardly a day goes by that we don’t hear about someone committing a violent, reprehensible, even evil, act. And each time it happens, before we know anything about the circumstances, we are already sure of one thing: We are nothing like that perpetrator. But how can we be so sure? After all, we are all human. In Understanding the Dark Side of Human Nature, Professor Daniel Breyer takes us on a fascinating philosophical journey into many of the deepest and darkest questions that have engaged humanity for millennia.

Bait and Switch x3
Revisado: 02-06-24
More a general philosophy and world religion survey than a deep dive into the dark side. In itself, that wasn't so bad, but the professor also buries his biases (vegetarian, leftist socio-cultural politics, ect) for the first 70% of the course then names them later. It would have been more honest to name them upfront (but then people would have stopped listening early) or not name them at all. In either case, his early commitment to not trying to convince the listener of anything seems insincere in hindsight after he outed himself. A three fold bait and switch doesn't seem like a "great course" to me, but it does capture something of college level studies, I suppose.

Nothing that goes nowhere
Revisado: 02-04-24
Punctuated with compelling moments and interesting ideas, the story amounts to nothing and goes nowhere. Character growth is minimal in those for which it was present at all and the structure of the plot is driven by a series of inexplicable events that happen to the characters rather than anything accomplished by them. This includes the ending, which seemed like the author had hit his word count and merely hammered out the shortest conclusion possible. I dare say, if there was a climax at all, it was so cheap, shallow, and so close to the final words that it could not be enjoyed at all. As a huge fan of the Elder Scrolls, this was terribly disappointing.

waning interest
Revisado: 11-01-23
I have been a huge fan of this series, but this entire book feels like it could have been condensed into a few extra chapters of the previous one. The only entry into the series that I haven't given 5-stars and I could only muster 3. I frequently found myself putting it down in boredom and wishing they'd just get on with it already. A slow burn entry into a fast paced series that nobody asked for or expected. I am surprised that so many have rated this one so high and have to admit that it might just be me, maybe I need a break from the series. I'll pause before reading the next two books, but I absolutely will and plan to enjoy them more than I did this one. Here is hoping anyway!

Entertaining but thin
Revisado: 04-06-23
Apparently I cannot rate a book without leaving a review anymore. So, I'll say this: Some of the language and imagery (killing, specifically) seems too casually used for young readers, but the writing and plot seem otherwise geared for exactly them. Not sure who the target audience was here. I found it enjoyable it for what it was, but I'm not sure what it was. It certainly was neither a literary masterpiece nor a contemporary adventure for adults or children. It spoke to my inner child. If that was the intent, then it succeeded. The narrative equivalent of an adult coloring book, but frankly I would have rather, personally, spent the time on a sci-fi or adventure story that were more my style and maturity level. I gave it four stars overall. It's not bad, not poorly done, just a few hours of entertainment that could have been better provided by something else.

Good Story, Mediocre Narration
Revisado: 12-13-22
The narration sounds okay. The total quality of the narrator's voice is not a great match for the material, but is easy enough to listen to in its own right. Where are the narrator falls short, however, is fairly frequently mispronouncing or saying incorrect words, saying "vicious" instead of "viscous" or "communication" instead of "communion." This happened fairly frequently, at least a dozen times, and although context easily allowed me to figure out the word that was intended, it caused me to cringe that the author's intentions were being butchered by someone who was probably paid for the service. The story itself isn't terribly original, but it puts together some common and some niche tropes from a broad range of science fiction, and I appreciated what the author did with them to tell his own particular story. That said, the ending seemed peculiarly rushed and amateurish.

Star Wars: Lost Stars (no substantial spoilers) is the Rebellion against the Galactic Empire - from its inception among protesting Senators, through the original trilogy, all the way to the conventional end of the war - through the lives and careers of a handful of the Imperial Academy's top graduates of the class sent to war during the events of "A New Hope" (same age as Luke and Leia).
