Historia
Lucas Goodgame lives in Majestic, Pennsylvania, a quaint suburb that has been torn apart by a recent tragedy. Everyone in Majestic sees Lucas as a hero—everyone, that is, except Lucas himself. Insisting that his deceased wife, Darcy, visits him every night in the form of an angel, Lucas spends his time writing letters to his former Jungian analyst Karl. It is only when Eli, an 18-year-old young man whom the community has ostracized, begins camping out in Lucas’s backyard that an unlikely alliance takes shape and the two begin a journey to heal their neighbors and themselves.

Imaginative, Well-Written, Worth the Listen
Revisado: 01-20-25
I recommend re-listening to the first hour or two. I had to bail, but I returned to give the book my best attention. The story is about people in a small American town who suffered a sudden violent loss. The book is about healing, kind people who help one another, and things working out quite well after all.

Historia
Over half a century ago, John Rowlands set out by canoe into the wilds of Canada to survey land for a timber company. After paddling alone for several days, he came upon "the lake of my boyhood dreams", which he named Cache Lake because there was stored the best that the north had to offer-timber for a cabin; fish, game, and berries to live on; and the peace and contentment he felt he could not live without.

Inspiring Cabin Life True Story
Revisado: 11-09-24
I think a family would hugely enjoy this book on a road trip. I am an old city girl with no inclination toward science or walking a long way -- and for sure not in the snow. But I loved this book. I would give the narrator a big hug. There are three men in this story, one of them an old Indian -- uh, Native American -- chief. I volunteered in Tahoe area wildlife rehab, admired sedated bears, syringe fed warm formula to baby chipmunks, so I love the author's attitude towards animals. The author tells his stories around a calendar year. The men read a lot and get ideas to build things to improve their rustic life, like a radio, mirrors to signal Morse Code. There are recipes. The book ends with the company plane getting thru bad weather to drop their mail, supplies and Christmas packages. A lovely, uplifting book!

Lit Major Samples A Best-Seller!
Revisado: 10-06-24
Very difficult listen! Volume up and then down, up and down. Whether narrator or sound guy, I hated that. Descriptions of sky, architecture and dress does not make it Great Literature! Nor does all the fear and violence. Nor mom-hood and love of kids. Thank you, Audible, for letting me sample an author I have shelved so many times at my public library. I think now I'll return to re-listening to the Outlander books.

Historia
After Tova Sullivan’s husband died, she began working the night shift at the Sowell Bay Aquarium, mopping floors and tidying up. Keeping busy has always helped her cope, which she’s been doing since her eighteen-year-old son, Erik, mysteriously vanished on a boat in Puget Sound over thirty years ago. Tova becomes acquainted with curmudgeonly Marcellus, a giant Pacific octopus living at the aquarium. Marcellus knows more than anyone can imagine but wouldn’t dream of lifting one of his eight arms for his human captors—until he forms a remarkable friendship with Tova.

A Real Upper Listen
Revisado: 09-30-24
This plot leaves the listener "in suspenders" until the last hour. While living beings and the facts may dovetail nicely, the exact way all this happens is a surprise. As with real life, there are disappointments and also surprises, compromises and new developments. No, all the men do not pair up with all the ladies and sing and dance or sail into the sunset like 1940's Hollywood. The plot has enough twists and the book is so well written, this is a work I would put on my listen again list.

Historia
It has been two years since the events in Shantaram, and since Lin lost two people he had come to love: his father figure, Khaderbhai, and his soul mate, Karla, married to a handsome Indian media tycoon. Lin returns from a smuggling trip to a city that seems to have changed too much, too soon. Many of his old friends are long gone, the new mafia leadership has become entangled in increasingly violent and dangerous intrigues, and a fabled holy man challenges everything that Lin thought he'd learned about love and life.

We Got Gangsters and Drug Dealers Over Here
Revisado: 09-06-24
So when do members of a motorcycle gang exchange bons mots? When does an old man punch out everyone he meets? When does the trashy recovered addict get the guy and then ask for an open marriage? Yes, once again I'll say it: I loved Shantaram but not the sequel! Hey, many American ladies have an Indian boyfriend in their past. I have been close to a lot of illegal drugs -- and I ran the other way! I had a TOP SECRET clearance once and can still pass a background check. This is trash romanticized. With Shantaram I didn't care if the story was fiction or autobiography, though the time in Afghanistan was no fun. With this sequel, I just don't care anymore. It is not worth my time to find out. Sorry, Lin!

Being Confused, I Need A Second Listen
Revisado: 07-06-24
Oh, boy! This book has everything! I perhaps did not pay good enough attention because I swear more than once the sheriff called and told something to Jo, to which she said she'd be right down. Huh? Here we go again. There are several absolutely nail-biting passages where you want to scream to High Heaven, "Shiloh, lock the door before you get in the shower!" And that's the end of the chapter. This book has pretty girls, famous girls, women who make food, women who know the law. It has lots of weapons, lakes, rivers, bad guys, we-aren't-sure guys, dead guys, one smart small boy, disabled canoes with holes -- and no cell phones! Oh, and lots of Indians, carefully-researched Ojibwe stories and words. See what you think!

Off To A Good Start With Cork!
Revisado: 07-04-24
Pretty exciting story. There's beautiful warm love and kids and early Alzheimer's and a retarded lady and lots of ice and snow, cabins, boots, parkas, snow mobiles, a good guy Catholic priest and Indians! Perfect listening for a heat wave! Cork is no longer the sheriff, but he can't turn off a citizen's natural curiosity about what is going on and the extent of the corruption that is ruining his beautiful town. Well written with great intelligence and research. Thought-provoking ending I had to back up three times looking for winding-up info. Krueger tells us the geese were back. This tells me he knows exactly how to tie up ends of a story, but he leaves important ends dangling, which is just fine.

Danger! Sex! Truth! Love! Challenge! Great Ending!
Revisado: 06-23-24
A most satisfying listen! This book took some research on several fronts because the characters are all in complicated situations -- like real life. They have backgrounds, and they go places. And there is desperation, stress, not nearly enough time. I loved the men's insistence on truth, which brought to light secrets not told before. Ever. There's a wonderful little brother and a horrible little brother. There's a bright girlfriend, childhood memories of food and vacations. And slow, gentle sex, appropriate to the circumstances. Bad guys taken out, good folks recovering fine. Lots of heroes.
For me the narrator began a bit rocky, but the story was so good that I think he got into the swing of it and did a 6-star job. I will look for both Eskens and Villa in the future.

Not Great Lit, Trashy, Superficial, Too Explicit
Revisado: 06-20-24
So that's what I've been missing! Small-town unwholesome trash with parents of teenagers ACTING LIKE teenagers. Hoo boy! I feel like I need to jump in the shower! ! But then I went to college. I dare anyone who reads this total crap to listen to my side of the Audible pickings, Try any of Diana Gabaldon's books beginning with "Outlander" in which Claire deflowers her new redheaded husband, Jamie. And when he is maddeningly gentle the fourth and fifth time, she gently teaches him the concept of not stopping and "doing it so hard it feels good"! And with Gabaldon, the reader's/listener's brain gets a workout savoring how elegantly Gabaldon describes the scene. Pretty soon Jamie is a WONDERFUL LOVER and his ego not bruised at all. Oh, and they keep "doing it" clear into old age, but the characters develop and change with time. . . . Or listen to Barbara Kingsolver's "Prodigal Summer" about a forest ranger with a braid down her back who lets a gorgeous coyote bounty hunter stay in her cabin even while she is protecting a young coyote family. Get a taste of Appalachia when a professor marries a hunky farmer who has five (?) sisters. There is an old man who loves his bug spray living next door to a sexy old lady who is trying to grow organic apples! . . . That book is full of delicious descriptions of full-out good living. And no spoilers here. Gabaldon and Kingsolver are both living American women authors whose characters have moved beyond simply getting it on.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Thrilling, Thought-Provoking Story
Revisado: 06-17-24
I loved the narration, Dominic Hoffman was all the voices and several languages, like butterscotch. You hold your breath listening, amazed at each new character, then hurting when they hurt, and then all full of questions as the bad dudes get their due in spades. I needed two listens to begin to understand the story. Then at the end you slowly realize the bad folks are gone, and the good folks are either gone to a better place or moved away and had lots of kids and a happy life. Works for me. Thank you, James McBride!
