Oh So Dated!
Revisado: 12-02-24
If you are not at least 60, preferably 70, you won't have much interest in this book. Too long stories of old Hollywood personalities and stars - many of whom you won't recognize, remember or care about. This book is past its sell by date. I struggled to get through it.

For centuries, scientists believed that living matter possessed a special quality—a spirit or essence—that differentiated it from nonliving matter. But by the nineteenth century, the scientific consensus was that the building blocks of one were identical to the building blocks of the other. Elixir tells the story of two young chemists who were not convinced, and how their work rewrote the boundary between life and nonlife.

Misleading Title
Revisado: 10-15-23
I have to add this book to the very short list of books I purchased and then just couldn't finish. I thought it might be about the current perfume industry, but it is really a chemistry book - and you would need some substantial background to appreciate it!
The narration was good, but the text is loaded with names and places that just don't mean anything to a contemporary US reader. I found it slow and boring, For me, life is just too short to spend time on this book. I wasn't learning anything, just listening to a background of words.
This might be terrific for the right reader but not for a non-chemist, general reader.

Being more than a bit neurotic myself, I really did enjoy this book. Frankly, I was sorry when it ended. Sonnenfeld is an engaging bundle of quirks and neuroses. And his narration made the book highly entertaining. Try it. You’ll like it!

Best-selling author and human guinea pig A. J. Jacobs puts his life to the test and reports on the surprising and entertaining results. He goes undercover as a woman, lives by George Washington’s moral code, and impersonates a movie star. He practices "radical honesty", brushes his teeth with the world’s most rational toothpaste, and outsources every part of his life to India—including reading bedtime stories to his kids.

Surprisingly Different and Entertaining
Revisado: 02-12-23
No, the author's voice did not bother me. The narration was clear and appropriate for a neurotic east coast writer.
Each chapter details a month in the author's life as he tries to live on the principles of radical honesty, on George Washington's rules, as a hot woman, etc. It's different, right?
I found each chapter insightful and amusing. Jacobs has a sense of humor that I can relate to and he keeps thing light while really elucidating some (old) new ideas. I recommend this listen.

Historia
In this Pulitzer Prize-winning classic, historian Barbara Tuchman brings to life the people and events that led up to World War I. This was the last gasp of the Gilded Age, of Kings and Kaisers and Czars, of pointed or plumed hats, colored uniforms, and all the pomp and romance that went along with war. How quickly it all changed...and how horrible it became.

I rarely review the books I read but...
Revisado: 09-22-20
I rarely review the books I read but this is more of a warning than a review. I love history and read a lot of it. This book is LOADED with foreign names, and locations that come at you so fast there is simply no way, unless you have a PhD in early 20th Century history, you will be able to understand, remember or absorb whatever points the author is trying to make.
I have no doubt that Ms. Tuchman is an EXPERT on this material but, I would guess, most of her readers are not. I'm a pretty smart guy but after listening to about 1/3 of the book I stopped to reflect. What exactly had I learned thus far?. The answer was absolutely nothing!
The material comes at you too fast, with many, many foreign soldier's and officer's names, and locales, to be absorbed. One more comment, she rarely mentions the year of the events she is discussing making things all the more difficult to sort out and understand.
There are so many excellent books on WWI that I feel comfortable in leaving this one for the advanced history degree candidates.
BTW, this is one of the few audiobooks I have not finished.

Careful.. this is not a book. It's part of a book
Revisado: 12-04-19
The story was interesting and the characters were well-developed and properly fleshed out. The problem is that there is NO ENDING to this book. It's simply a feeder for the next chapter which is in a subsequent book. There is no pretense of an end and this "book" cannot really stand on its own. If this volume stops at Chapter 50, the next book will begin with Chapter 51.
I know that book series often closely follow on, one after the other, but don't listen to Six of Crows in the anticipation that you will hear a story that can be enjoyed in one volume.

It's not what I expected...
Revisado: 09-23-16
I don't think the summary of this book was accurate. I thought it would largely be about the trip - the road. But it wasn't. Two thirds of the book was about the author's mental state and mental illnesses. Frankly, this was not very interesting to me and it definitely was not the reason I purchased the book.
Further, I never felt I got to know either of the main characters nor did the story develop for me, any particular interest in them.

Historia
Life is not easy for the poor relations of England’s upper crust, but fate and clever schemes bring them together. Lady Fortescue and Colonel Sandhurst hatch a plan: What if they were to transform her decrepit Bond Street home into a posh hotel, offering their guests the pleasure of being waited upon by nobility? With the help of other down-and-out aristocrats, they do just that, and London’s newest hotel, The Poor Relation, is born. The establishment is an immediate hit with London’s most illustrious citizens, save the Duke of Rowcester....

Revisado: 08-26-13
And I have listened to over 200! And I like MC Beaton! This book was dull and, to me, incomprehensible. I can't tell you what it was about because I simply could not follow the story. I tried to slog through to the end but honestly, life is too short. Awful, confused, unfocused, un-compelling and boring. Well narrated, though.
