I loved the poetry, the simplicity, the self-awareness and heart of this imperfect woman. And the narration was perfect.

Historia
In this unnamed city, to be interesting is dangerous. Middle sister, our protagonist, is busy attempting to keep her mother from discovering her maybe-boyfriend and to keep everyone in the dark about her encounter with Milkman. But when first brother-in-law sniffs out her struggle and rumours start to swell, middle sister becomes "interesting" - the last thing she ever wanted to be. To be interesting is to be noticed, and to be noticed is dangerous. Milkman is a tale of gossip and hearsay, silence and deliberate deafness. It is a story of inaction with enormous consequences.

vivid characters, evocative setting, and a terrific narrator all drew me in right from the start. I have not yet read the prequel (the searcher) but that did not impede how thoroughly engrossing this book was.

Historia
All work and no play make Jack a dull boy. But when one of his professors offers to send American grad student Jack Farmer to Europe to do historical research in Amsterdam’s Begijnhof—a peaceful closed community in the heart of the bustling Dutch capital—Jack looks forward to a summer of mostly play and not much work. Then he meets Jet Schilders, an attractive young nurse who takes care of the elderly woman next door, and realizes that his summer in The Netherlands might just turn out to be even more fun than he'd hoped.

why change narrators?
Revisado: 02-16-23
the narrator for books 1-3 was perfect. it was Midwest understatement, personified. just the slightest change in intonation reflected the different characters. any sarcasm or irony came through in the words and the timing. pinchot, however, felt the need to indicate sarcasm and cynicism, with no effort to provide continuity in characters. the female characters somehow all sounded like bad imitations of trump, of all people. and don't get me started on his attempt to "sound black" - that was even worse than the dreadful caricature of a jewish accent. it pretty much ruined the book for me.
