Things I got in the way of me enjoying this book
Revisado: 02-12-25
I picked up this book because I saw a brief interview with the writer on the Instagram Jimmy on Relationships and I was intrigued by her statement that said something to the effect that we are responsible for what we bring to the relationship and we can’t expect our partner to be the only one who has to improve, work on themselves and make changes. I mostly enjoyed the book and she definitely had some perspectives that have helped me. However, I’m never a fan of an author who decides to read her own audiobook. While a writer may understand their material better than anybody else, I think they should leave this job to the professionals. She sometimes came across as sounding, overly dramatic or pedantic. Finally, it may be a function of my age, I’m in my 60s, but often the author came across, to me, with a sense of self-importance, often inserting herself and her stories and her triumphs into the mix when they weren’t really necessary. And also, some of her notions which to me, were stated as big ideas seemed so self evident. I would be interested in reading this writer again in another 20 years.

In the early 1900s, teenaged Sunja, the adored daughter of a crippled fisherman, falls for a wealthy stranger at the seashore near her home in Korea. He promises her the world, but when she discovers she is pregnant - and that her lover is married - she refuses to be bought.

New narrator!
Revisado: 01-12-24
I really enjoy these stories and the characters and the humor. I did have an issue this time with the new narrator. While generally, she did a good job, in my opinion, she would too often lower her voice to speak in what sounded like a conspiratorial tone, which I thought was overdone And physiologically dropping tone of her voice at these times made it difficult to actually hear

David Rakoff's best-selling collection of autobiographical essays, Fraud, established him as one of today's funniest and most insightful writers. Now, in Don't Get Too Comfortable, Rakoff moves from the personal to the public, journeying into the land of unchecked plenty that is contemporary America. Rarely have greed, vanity, selfishness, and vapidity been so mercilessly and wittily skewered.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

A book to remember
Revisado: 05-30-23
I love this book as much as I love the Poisonwood Bible, but in this book, the narration took storytelling to new heights. My hat is off to the author (and her researchers). The local expressions and perspectives capture the culture and illuminate a broader perspective of the Appalachians.

Elf and Yoli are sisters. While on the surface Elfrieda's life is enviable (she's a world-renowned pianist, glamorous, wealthy, and happily married,) and Yolandi's a mess (she's divorced and broke, with two teenagers growing up too quickly), they are fiercely close - raised in a Mennonite household and sharing the hardship of Elf's desire to end her life.

Historia
In Remember, neuroscientist and acclaimed novelist Lisa Genova delves into how memories are made and how we retrieve them. You'll learn whether forgotten memories are temporarily inaccessible or erased forever and why some memories are built to exist for only a few seconds (like a passcode) while others can last a lifetime (your wedding day). You'll come to appreciate the clear distinction between normal forgetting (where you parked your car) and forgetting due to Alzheimer's (that you own a car).

Great book, iffy on the narration
Revisado: 09-22-21
This was a really great book which clarified and simplified the complex topic of memory. While I can see that the author is probably great at presenting her work at conferences etc. I found myself at times wishing that a professional narrator had taken on the job but, that is a small grievance and wouldn’t stop me from recommending this book to anyone

An ambitious book
Revisado: 07-25-21
I appreciate the Gottman’s desire and effort to help couples on a large scale. However the skills required for this level of communication to be successful would be extremely high… Especially for a couples who have any type of conflict.
The male narrator was OK but the female narrators style didn’t work for me at all. I can’t put my finger on what her style was - like a reporter or someone presenting a paper – I don’t know, but for me it meant many parts of the book seemed artificial. I do appreciate them identifying most contentious issues that couples experience and also the message they send of making your spouse or partner a priority and cherishing them

Historia
Author David Brooks explores the four commitments that define a life of meaning and purpose: to a spouse and family, to a vocation, to a philosophy or faith, and to a community. Our personal fulfillment depends on how well we choose and execute these commitments. Brooks looks at a range of people who have lived joyous, committed lives, and who have embraced the necessity and beauty of dependence. He gathers their wisdom on how to choose a partner, how to pick a vocation, how to live out a philosophy, and how we can begin to integrate our commitments into one overriding purpose.

Mixed 80/20 - liked/disliked- overall helpful
Revisado: 08-07-19
Overall I enjoyed the thoughts that the author had to share, even though at times they seemed to lack cohesion toward the overall topic. He certainly has a wealth of good food for thought for anyone at a crossroads in their life, but I can also see this book would be helpful for a curious younger person who has the maturity to consider how their future might play out.
I thought the narrator did a good job but to me, his voice sounded like an elderly man and so, at some points, the text sounded rather critical than inspiring. Perhaps a younger, more upbeat voice would’ve made the message more uplifting/enticing instead of sounding scolding
