Historia
"Sounds like our moms are cooking up a scheme for Mother's Day. Did Evelyn tell you to bring a date and if you didn't, she could set you up?" "What? Yes, did Lois give you the same challenge?" The two old birds must've come up with the idea over a pot of their chamomile tea. "Yep, of course she offered it up with a big dollop of guilt on top so I couldn't refuse."

A sweet romance
Revisado: 03-16-25
This is my first story by this author and I believe by this narrator! I enjoyed getting to know Rae. She is very relatable. it was easy to understand why she carried around her identity from her youth. When you come from a small town like she did, it makes an impact.
Gabriel was a bit harder to warm up to. He's also from the same small town and he seems like he still sees himself as the popular high school kid, not a grown up man, which doesn't do him any favors. As we learn more about him and the story, you know that it's intentional from the author.
Like both of their families, there were moments when I wanted to shake them both and tell them to figure it out! ha ha ha It was definitely a complicated relationship, which we're given insights to their past along the way.
The meddling moms were great! I loved their sweet friendship. The extended families were fun overall.
The faith interspersed throughout the story added the right touch as the characters worked through their emotions and life decisions!
I enjoyed the narrator. She did a good job with all of the different characters... and there were a lot. I could easily tell the difference between the moms and with Rae & Charlie. Because there were a good number of side women a couple of times I wasn't sure who was talking, but figured it out really quick!
*Thanks to the narrator for sending me the book!

A Deep, Rich Story
Revisado: 04-02-21
Wow! Just...wow! I was so surprised by this story. It took a couple chapters for me to settle into it, but once I did, I was engrossed. While it's probably considered a time split, the difference in years is only a handful compared to most in that category.
This is the first story I've read that's set in Japan. It was intense from both perspectives. From Dave, the American airman's view of being captured, which the whole scenario surrounding that is savage. Then to him and his crew mates being POWs. The author doesn't shy away from the brutal honesty of what being a POW must've been like. There were parts that were hard to listen to - to a degree - but not so much that I didn't feel like I couldn't listen any more. Just the harsh reality of the situation.
And then there's Miyako who, I didn't realize her age until nearly the end of the story. The direction her life took after losing her brother and her father's health deteriorating isn't a pretty one. You can feel her desperation and her sense of family honor. I was so wrapped up in her survival and then Dave's survival, it was a jolt every time they switched characters. lol I wanted more of both! I wanted freedom for both!
How God is found in the story is incredible. It was surprising to me. But isn't that like God, to be surprising? When there's nothing left to hold onto...
This was such a nail biter and I couldn't wait to have something to do where I could be listening to my audiobook. I enjoyed the narrator a LOT! She really brought the characters to life. There's so much I want to say about the story because of how rich and deep it is, but too much might give things away and this is just one of those stories you have to read to take in every aspect and not miss out.

A nice WWII story
Revisado: 03-23-21
This was a nice story if you're a fan of WWII. It's not often we read stories of someone being sent to America as the war is starting.
I liked Abby who has such a sweet innocence when she arrives back in the States. She has such a sweet relationship with her uncle, but her aunt is another story to begin with.
Being a gardener myself, I enjoyed the character of Jim, who falls for Abby, whose station is above his. Being sent to Europe to fight in the war is so contrary to his nature is hard to see him go.
I couldn't figure out where the tension world come in with this story until Henri made an appearance. Talk about a character who is easy to dislike.
There are some unexpected moments in the story and some sweet highs!

A Cute Novella
Revisado: 01-04-21
This was a cute story. I didn't realize it was a novella at first. I thought the storyline was going fast for some reason. lol
Tom shows up at a lumberjack camp looking for work. This is a man who should be a teacher, not a lumberjack, but he was doing what he needed to do. When he first glimpses Josephine, he's a goner and does everything he can to make his attentions known to her.
Jo doesn't want to give Tom the time of day. Unfortunately, he proves himself relentless and she can't resist his attempts to get to know her better. When he suggests if she makes a fruitcatke that matches his mother's, he'll marry her, she decides she's up for the challenge. She's grown up around lumberjacks and doesn't want to live in the camp forever. If she were to marry a lumberjack, she'd never escape.
Her brothers make things difficult for Tom to have time with Jo, but after the initial meeting it's more in a humorous way. At one point, Tom stops a bad guy with a punch, but when Jo finally sees the bad guy he's all beat up and she basically accuses Tom of being a violent man. Of course, the brothers had a hand in that.
They have some miscommunication and question each other over certain events. There's also a bit of mystery involving Tom's mom. What's a novella if the characters don't have a bit of angst, right?

a fun read

I enjoyed this story. I got through this book quicker than most. Ther narrator's men's voices sounded silly so that was a bit distracting. This was the first book by this author and I'll be back for more.

Gripping Civil War Story
Revisado: 03-05-20
This was an excellent book! Being the first book I've listened to on here I wasn't sure what to expect. The characters were well done and distinguishable.
The writing in this story had me glued to each word. I loved the character of Charlotte. She was a feisty woman for her time and I appreciated her strength. Phineas was ghastly and may be one of my most hated villains thanks to the author's skill with her pen.
Then there was Caleb who I was rooting for, but always seemed to be like a ship passing in the night with a Charlotte. If there hadn't been a Caleb I definitely would have been cheering for Edward.
And lady, but not least was poor, sweet Ruby. Pulling for her to catch a break while watching her struggle over and over again. She was the character that pulled the most on my heartstrings.
