Historia
In his newest collection of essays, David Sedaris lifts the corner of ordinary life, revealing the absurdity teeming below its surface. His world is alive with obscure desires and hidden motives, a world where forgiveness is automatic and an argument can be the highest form of love. Dress Your Family in Corduroy and Denim is another unforgettable collection from one of the wittiest and most original writers at work today.

If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

Another A+ for David Sedaris! I have both read & listened to all of his books and memoirs and he never disappoints. The only thing better is seeing him in person & having him sign your books 🤣 I highly recommend to anyone with a sense of humor or a lack of one! Please keep them coming & cannot wait to see him in Grand Rapids in December!

Excellent realistic sci-if
Revisado: 11-05-20
I’m a big fan of “hard” sci-fi, but find many novels grouped into this category. This was very interesting take on first encounter. The Xenophobic beliefs of humans is very realistic especially in the current climate in the US.
I wouldn’t classify it as HARD sci-fi but as realistic or plausible sci-fi & worry.a listen if your a fan of either.

AMAZING! SUPERB story & detailed history!
Revisado: 09-12-20
Tom Rob Smith is truly an amazing historical fiction writer. The 3 book series is a historical fiction master piece. I cannot think of a better series that describes the details about Stalinist era Soviet Union, the transition into the Krucherov era than Child 44 & The Secret Speech. The historical accuracy blended with a fascinating story line & great characters is something Smith does better than anyone today.
Highly recommended, great read, great listen! Definitely start on Child 44, it is worth it!

Historia
If you've ever laughed your way through David Sedaris's cheerfully misanthropic stories, you might think you know what you're getting with Calypso. You'd be wrong. When he buys a beach house on the Carolina coast, Sedaris envisions long, relaxing vacations spent playing board games and lounging in the sun with those he loves most. And it's as idyllic as he imagined, except for one tiny, vexing realization: it's impossible to take a vacation from yourself. With Calypso, Sedaris sets his formidable powers of observation - and dark humor - toward middle age and mortality.

Decent book. Interesting coronavirus type flus mentioned
Revisado: 04-05-20
Story was ok. Not superb. Not bad. Entertaining & thought provoking at times.
Craziest part was references to a future flu that had people wearing masks & scientists racing to find a cure. Clearly written long before the coronavirus storm hit us. That very small part of the story was prophetic in a way.

Superb
Revisado: 01-07-19
This was the 3rd time I’ve listened to this book & it is just as good the 3rd time as it was the 1st. Ready Player One offers a glimpse into an uncertain technological future. The world suffers from a massive energy crisis due to the fact that the oil that sustained modern mans lifestyle for almost 200 years was consumed & now a world devoid of oil is upon human kind. This causes mass inequality & terrible living conditions for the masses.
This fact alone makes the book extremely interesting when you view it from this mindset. This was only possible because I read the book multiple times. Even without that knowledge the book is vastly entertaining! The author paints vivid pictures with his writing detailing a digital world that almost upon us!
Get ready for the masses to be immersed in a digital reality because it is coming ! Just pray it doesn’t get this bad!

Truly Superb !
Revisado: 05-10-18
This book is truly a delight! From the very start the book held my attention which is sometimes hard to do being ADD. I often give up on books in I’m not sucked in within the first half hour but this was not an issue with “A Gift of Time”.
I was skeptical about the narration as it had a southern twang to it but as the book progressed I realized that the narrator couldn’t have been better chosen for this book & he did a marvelous job mastering all the diverse characters voices.
The time travel aspect of the novel is one I often find myself gravitating towards & this book took a very unique view on it. The many paradox’s were explained & quite well I felt. The author also introduced a very interesting possibility for what awaits us upon our death.
So if you like books with real heart felt human emotions that don’t lack intelligence this is a perfect fit. Science, history & humanities are all covered in this book. Excellent A+!

Mellow pace full of intelligent intrigue
Revisado: 02-21-18
To be fair I often give up on a book in the first couple chapters if it doesn’t drag me in & I came close with Munich: A Novel.
However, my overwhelming interest of the WWII & Pre-War era kept me listening. From the start it was clear the author researched the topic with the utmost diligence. I felt I knew this period of history well but the author introduced several new & factual aspects of the days prior to the Munich agreement of which I was previously unaware.
The fictional aspects of the book are written in such a way that historical accuracy & fiction blend so perfectly that if you didn’t know better you would assume this was the way of it.
In conclusion if you a fan of WWII & the events that brought it about this book will please you. If you find it slightly tiresome stick with it a bit longer I bet you will enjoy it at the end.
