somewhere in this 18 hr book is a good 10 hr book
Revisado: 10-20-24
Tenuously connected rambling didn't seem to justify 18 hours. A good editor would have been useful.

Historia
When unforeseen circumstances during an innovative—and unsanctioned—commercial asteroid-mining mission leave two crew members stranded, those who make it back must engineer a rescue, all while navigating a shifting web of global political alliances and renewed Cold War tensions. With Earth governments consumed by the ravages of climate change and unable to take the risks necessary to make rapid progress in space, the crew must build their own next-gen spacecraft capable of mounting a rescue in time for the asteroid's next swing by Earth.

boring, where's the editor?
Revisado: 04-16-24
A good editor would have made the author cut all the pointless detail that doesn't move the story along. e.g. nobody needs the detail of testing the tele-robots, visiting the Nigerian family could be done in a single paragraph. This is why you NEED a good editor.

California has 23 million people. After the EMP there are a few dozen.? And everyone but the Sloans are gun crazy? At least the Sloan family doesn't start shooting everything until halfway through the book

Historia
The Argus Space Station looks down on a nightmarish Earth. And from this safe distance, the Committee enforces its despotic rule. There are too many people and too few resources, and they need 12 billion to die before Earth can be stabilised. So corruption is rife, people starve, and the poor are policed by mechanised overseers and identity-reader guns. Citizens already fear the brutal Inspectorate with its pain inducers. But to reach its goals, the Committee will unleash satellite laser weaponry, taking carnage to a new level. This is the world Alan Saul wakes to.

Life is too short for boring books
Revisado: 07-19-22
The Departure answers the questions, "is fascism bad?", "Is overbearing bureaucracy bad?", "Is society based on class structure viable?" (BTW, Yes, Yes, and No) it does not answer the question, "if you have an omnipotent AI, why do you need a protagonist with amnesia?" There, I just saved you 16 1/2 hours and one credit. You're welcome.

Historia
Before the Arrest, Sandy Duplessis had a reasonably good life as a screenwriter in L.A. An old college friend, the charismatic and malicious Peter Todbaum, had become one of the most powerful men in Hollywood. Now, post-Arrest, nothing is what it was. Sandy, who calls himself Journeyman, has landed in rural Maine. There he assists the butcher and delivers the food grown by his sister, Maddy, at her farm. But then Todbaum shows up in an extraordinary vehicle: a retrofitted tunnel-digger powered by a nuclear reactor. Can it be that Todbaum wants to produce one more extravaganza?

90% of this book is thoughts of fear, & regret
Revisado: 02-10-22
Kidnapped, raped, and abused 90% of the protagonist's thoughts are about her fears and insecurities. The 100% of the rapist psychopath's thoughts are of misogyny. The ex-soldier's thoughts are regrets for mistakes made in the past. At least the dog is normal.

Great Classic ruined by narrator
Revisado: 05-07-21
Jack London wrote great stories of the Alaska gold rush. Real, gritty, harsh, and beautiful. Call of the Wild showed the depths of human brutality and the heights of human kindness. Great story. If only they had picked a better narrator . Listen to this book, just find a different version.
