Historia
In a time when our political and cultural views feel more polarized than ever, Tyson provides a much-needed antidote to so much of what divides us, while making a passionate case for the twin chariots of enlightenment—a cosmic perspective and the rationality of science. After thinking deeply about how science sees the world and about Earth as a planet, the human brain has the capacity to reset and recalibrates life’s priorities, shaping the actions we might take in response. No outlook on culture, society, or civilization remains untouched.

Inspiring, brilliant, a bid morbid at times but only in an effort to wake us up to the beauty in ourselves and this glorious, living sphere we call home.

This book has changed my life.
Revisado: 11-20-22
I recommend this book to everyone at any stage of their life. It is informative, encouraging, enlightening, and riveting (if you invest yourself in every example provided). I listened to it on my long drives to work and I encourage you to tune out the world’s distractions in order to fully absorb as much knowledge as possible. I was not able to listen while my kids were still interrupting or if anyone offered any quick conversation. Since I do not have a scientific or medical background I had to really tune into each word and imagine what was being explained in order to understand. Do not be discouraged if at first you find yourself slipping out of focus while listening. It is bound to happen given the newness of the material you are engaging with. Stick to it. I hit the “30 sec back button” a million times but each was worth it. My tip is to visualize the material while taking it in. The narrator is absolutely perfect. Like I stated in the title of my review, this book changed my life, and I am certain will change yours.

Historia
Jill Louise Busby spent years in the nonprofit sector specializing in diversity and inclusion. She spoke at academic institutions, businesses, and detention centers on the topics of race, power, and privilege and delivered over 200 workshops to nonprofit organizations all over the California Bay Area. In 2016, fed up with what passed as progressive in the Pacific Northwest, Busby uploaded a one-minute video about race, white institutions, and faux liberalism to Instagram. The video received millions of views across social platforms.

Unique
Revisado: 06-13-22
Stumbled upon this gem as if by accident, but I know better. I am grateful to have heard a lot of my internal dialogue voiced by someone twice as eloquent and half as insecure.
I think this should be a required text for influencers everywhere and for Black people stationed in predominantly white spaces. I’m certain that some personality types will eventually find this book and will proceed to do what the internet does best. But others, if honest, will find a piece of their own alter ego lurking in every monologue.
I recommend this book to anyone who finds themselves in the throes of fame, to anyone dealing with the muted failures of a resounding success story, to anyone who loves their mother and needs to be reminded of it, to anyone who is heading out on their path unsure of what they are searching for, to anyone who is hella sarcastic and enjoys dry humor, to the other, to the many, to anyone who has two things to say and only one mouth to say it with.

Excellent Ending to a Wonderful Story
Revisado: 06-06-22
Truly remarkable how Jemisin was able to tie up this very full journey with the perfect bow at the end. I didn’t get the exact ending that I wanted but I got what I needed. Bravo.

Historia
This is the way the world ends...for the last time. It starts with the great red rift across the heart of the world's sole continent, spewing ash that blots out the sun. It starts with death, with a murdered son and a missing daughter. It starts with betrayal, and long dormant wounds rising up to fester. This is the Stillness, a land long familiar with catastrophe, where the power of the Earth is wielded as a weapon. And where there is no mercy.

Absolutely wonderful.
Revisado: 03-30-22
I feel like there are few accurate words to describe how incredibly impressive N. K. Jemisin is as a writer. This is the first book I read of hers and I am entirely hooked. I will admit that the first few pages are a bit tough to grasp as you feel pulled into the Earth itself without fully understanding how you got there. But then the vision becomes clear and the story unfolds like a beautiful tapestry.
Having experienced my own degree of trauma I refused to read it because of the other reviews that mentioned child abuse as being too constant and graphic. But I can assure you that it is only included to reveal the motives of the characters and only really appears three times at very distinct moments in the story. Please don’t let that keep you from engaging in this read as just a single or few 30-second skips can keep you from hearing the details. I did so and was still able to grasp the general sense of it all.
As for the narrator, she was wonderful. She changes her tone and speed to adhere to the multiple voices but does so in a way that’s not annoying.
I highly recommend this book.
I love

Historia
God is change. That is the central truth of the Earthseed movement, whose unlikely prophet is 18-year-old Lauren Olamina. The young woman's diary entries tell the story of her life amid a violent 21st-century hell of walled neighborhoods and drug-crazed pyromaniacs - and reveal her evolving Earthseed philosophy. Against a backdrop of horror emerges a message of hope: if we are willing to embrace divine change, we will survive to fulfill our destiny among the stars.

Amazing & Haunting
Revisado: 06-27-21
It is difficult to call a story with this type of grief, wonderful...but it is. Butler is able to illustrate horror without dragging the reader through unnecessary gore. The harrowing landscape she paints still manages to highlight hope...even if it is laced in reality. There are inspiring nuggets that can help those searching for a new wave of thought and helpful tips if the zombie apocalypse is something you fear. The narrator is simply wonderful in every possible way. Her voice is one that I miss already.

Give the Narrator Her Flowers
Revisado: 06-03-21
The story is great, full of twins and turns, disappointment and fleeting joy. The descriptive narrative helps paint wonderful images in your mind...images I hope the movie or tv show will be able to live up to.
The narrator does an amazing job. She has an impressive ability to stay true to the voices she has created for each character. If I ever walked away from the book and missed a brief introduction or setup I could always tell who was speaking based on how well she trained my ear to recognize each character. Her accents, pauses, her overall story telling skills are remarkable.
This book has 85 chapters. With two kids under 3 years old, I never thought I’d see the end and yet here I am less than a month later writing the review. It is good enough to make you want to stay up late just to sneak in a couple more chapter.
The chapters themselves are all quite short. Making you feel empowered as you blaze from one to another.
The author’s motives behind the book are my own so it was an added plus to be able to learn what inspired her to produce this art piece.
One particular character disappointment me greatly. I can’t get over it. Those who have read it...you already know who it is. (Insert eye roll and broken heart).
