Historia
Alexei Navalny began writing Patriot shortly after his near-fatal poisoning in 2020. It is the full story of his life: his youth, his call to activism, his marriage and family, his commitment to challenging a world super-power determined to silence him, and his total conviction that change cannot be resisted—and will come. Patriot is Navalny’s final letter to the world: a moving account of his last years spent in the most brutal prison on earth; a reminder of why the principles of individual freedom matter so deeply; and a rousing call to continue the work for which he sacrificed his life.

Incredibly inspiring
Revisado: 11-10-24
This is one of the most remarkable memoirs that I have ever read. Incredibly human, funny, and hopeful. It gives a window into the mind and soul of a man who stood up for what he believed in and for his country. He is worthy of the “patriot” title of the book. I look forward to the day that Russia is worthy of Navalny.

Historia
In this rich, fascinating history, John Ghazvinian traces the complex story of the relations between these two nations back to the Persian Empire of the 18th century - the subject of great admiration by Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams - and an America seen by Iranians as an ideal to emulate for their own government.

Outstanding telling of a complex history
Revisado: 03-19-23
This book is a masterclass in translating scholarly historical work into a history that is accessible to a broader audience. Not only was the story really compelling told, but I found myself repeatedly stopping to jot down notes of US-Iranian events that I was not aware of but had important implications.
The narrator of the book also did an excellent job.

Historia
Over the course of more than three decades as an American diplomat, William J. Burns played a central role in the most consequential diplomatic episodes of his time - from the bloodless end of the Cold War to the collapse of post-Cold War relations with Putin’s Russia, from post-9/11 tumult in the Middle East to the secret nuclear talks with Iran. In The Back Channel, Burns recounts, with novelistic detail and incisive analysis, some of the seminal moments of his career.

Historia
Based on over a hundred interviews and on secret records of White House-Kremlin contacts, Not One Inch shows how the United States successfully overcame Russian resistance in the 1990s to expand NATO to more than 900 million people. But it also reveals how Washington's hardball tactics transformed the era between the Cold War and the present day, undermining what could have become a lasting partnership.

Fascinating, well-researched & timely
Revisado: 01-03-23
I thought that I had a good understanding of the history of NATO expansion, but this book really expanded my understanding. It is well-argued and provides a valuable perspective on NATO expansion that connects well to today’s U.S.-Russia relationship.

From two former military officers and award-winning authors comes a chillingly authentic geopolitical thriller that imagines a naval clash between the US and China in the South China Sea in 2034 - and the path from there to a nightmarish global conflagration.

Good setup, disappointing execution
Revisado: 03-11-21
I was eager to read this book, given the reputations of the two authors. The setup of the book that begins the scenario is good and highlights the risks that both the South China Sea disputes and cyberconflict present. The payoff of this setup was pretty disappointing and becomes increasingly implausible. The interview with Adm Stavridis at the end of the book is well worth the listen, as he highlights many of the chief dangers the U.S. faces today quite well.
