Historia
What begins as a typical day for Officer Bernadette Manuelito - serving a bench warrant, dealing with a herd of cattle obstructing traffic, and stumbling across a crime scene - takes an unexpected twist when she’s called to help find an old friend. Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

Nice interplay of personal and professional for Manuelito and Cher
Revisado: 03-01-25
Liked the storyline and the introduction of interpersonal and marital issues for Bernie and Jim. Two plot lines of such impact simply couldn’t be maintained and the Gabriela/unknown baby thread suffered and wasn’t adequately developed. Narration was substandard. Really need to make sure narrator can properly pronounce place names. It takes away from the flow when mispronunciation occurs. Pretty mopey intonation as well.

Historia
The car fire didn’t kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del and confounded by the prime suspect’s refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune.

Always a pleasure
Revisado: 12-10-23
Tony Hillerman is masterful in drawing In characters with deep inner lives and introspection. Likewise, his respect for Navajo culture and description of the physical environment are inspired. Subtle connections between culture, plot, and characters who are compelling and never perfect make reading and re-reading a delight. They feel like home

Historia
Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life—living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising their beautiful son, Asher—was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined that she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in and taking over her father’s beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start.

Settle into this well- told story
Revisado: 02-20-23
Great character development, educational, on occasion a bit pedantic, but a book that satisfies on several levels and covers an amazing number of current thought topics. I question the ultimate decision made by the local prosecutor, a minor detail and the book had to end sometime!

Historia
For years, America's national parks have provided public breathing spaces in a world in which such spaces are steadily disappearing, which is why close to 300 million people visit the parks each year. Now, to honor the centennial of the National Park Service, Terry Tempest Williams, the author of the beloved memoir When Women Were Birds, returns with The Hour of Land, a literary celebration of our national parks, what they mean to us, and what we mean to them.

Impactful thought
Revisado: 02-01-23
Williams’ poetic soul sees with rare clarity the value of wilderness and refuses defeatist or pessimistic thought in the face of the craven American government actions for the past two plus centuries. Her words are passionate and inspirational and descriptions of the American wilderness scape invite one to experience and be revitalized by it.

Historia
Like many well-to-do Upper East Siders over the age of 65, esteemed art appraiser Percival Skinner had planned to spend his retirement living off his savings. But a market correction has left him living below his prior means. One day he’s visited by a dapper fixer in search of a famous work by a Renaissance master. Skinner knows the work well: The original was owned by his ancestor, and was passed down through his family over the generations. If, as an intermediary, he can coordinate a sale, a small fortune awaits. Problem is, he might not be the only one on the make.

Delightful well-paced story telling
Revisado: 06-10-21
All the right notes of snobbish intellect, clever story line, scurrilous character, and ironic turn of fortune are struck. Time well spent and some good chuckles along the way.
