Historia
In 2019, author John Green met Henry Reider, a young tuberculosis patient at Lakka Government Hospital in Sierra Leone. John became fast friends with Henry, a boy with spindly legs and a big, goofy smile. In the years since that first visit to Lakka, Green has become a vocal advocate for increased access to treatment and wider awareness of the healthcare inequities that allow this curable, preventable infectious disease to also be the deadliest, killing over a million people every year. In Everything Is Tuberculosis, John tells Henry’s story.

Digestible, Educational, and Needed
Revisado: 04-24-25
The only person that could help me better understand the disease that is Tuberculosis, other than my good friend Josiah, is the wonderful storyteller that is John Green. I force myself to read nonfiction and biographies every year, but they rarely come this easily. John makes this topic, that I would otherwise struggle to read off page, easily digestible.
John will hold your hand and tell you the horrors, while also handing you a cup of metaphorical warm tea and tell you there is hope if humans work together.
I deeply valued the stories, told in only a way that John Green could relay.
It is hard.
It is sad.
It is devastating and maddening.
But all in all, I feel more educated for it.
<3 I have always said if there was one person in the world I could get coffee with, I would want it to be John, bc ...I truly believe in his heart for people and his actions that continually support his words.

Rick Riordan’s newest Percy Jackson adventure is full of hilarious set pieces, a diverse cast of gods and monsters, and many other delightful tricks and treats. Percy Jackson, now a high school senior, needs three recommendation letters from the Greek gods in order to get into New Rome University. He earned his first one by retrieving Ganymede’s chalice. Now the goddess Hecate has offered Percy another “opportunity”—all he has to do is pet sit her polecat, Gale, and mastiff, Hecuba, over Halloween week while she is away. Piece of cake, right?

This was fun, goofy, and silly in a way only Percy Jackson can be. I genuinely love the "non-travel" stories more than the original overarching travel plot of the first series.
I genuinely have preferred this secondary ache to the first series!
This was truly JUST FUN.
The jokes are trite and the plot is "fine", but its good ole fashioned goofy which is the type of reading I really needed this year. It's a barely squeeze into "4" stars book for me, but to call it a three would probably be unfair.
Can we all just agree his mom is maybe the best fictional mom ever? ugh, I love her.

What Happened?!?

Blood and Bone was enthralling, new, and terribly engaging. A relationship you fall in love with and brag to all those around you. You want them to read it, to also keep it near to their heart. Book two, however, is like when the relationship not only falls apart but implodes. It is wretched, murky, and leaves you screaming WHY in the coffee house, with patrons watching. It is not a breakup-it is a desecration from what you once held dear. Book three calls years later, hoping you have forgotten what a mess your relationship had been in. It begs for your forgiveness. It reminds you of what you once had, but there is this knot forming in your soul. You understand you have both grown and changed in the years apart...yet you can't quite catch your breath. You notice that book three has changed so desperately the dates are wrong and the memories haven't just faded, but instead they have been meticulously re-written. There is a gasp in your heart when you recognize that albeit some things are forgiven, there isn't much recognition for the remorse necessary to move past things. Your a different person, it's a different book. It has forgotten its origins and why it was so beautiful, regretfully the magic is gone. You can speak joy and can champion the fact that its trajectory looks to be more positive than when you both last spoke, but it's too late to try and reignite the old flame. You have both moved on.
Virtue was messy, contrary, and somehow regrettable- constantly ruining characters that we had grown to love and admire.
Anguish is now released so far into the future of its predecessors that you luckily forget much of what virtue did poorly, while completely aware of plot/characters/ and magic being altered and not fitting into the series well. Personally, I liked this book far more than Virtue, and can't blame Adeyemi and her team if they pushed this trilogy off for multiple years to just give the audience a gap large enough for her to get away with steering audience attention away from the failing second book.
It feels critical and somewhat cruel, but book two- in my personal opinion- is probably the biggest let down to any series I've ever read. Anguish found it's footing in a story, so void of the first two books, you could more easily enjoy the ride. I found myself mostly engaging with the plot, but desperately still craving the intense brilliance one brought. It's like a flavor I'll never taste again and that breaks my heart.
I liked the stakes of this book, even if they felt out of the box, and I appreciate her redeeming lost relationships- in a way of value.
The ending is...fast. For those of you that have read A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, ...get ready- this somehow is even quicker than that god forsaken shotgun ending.
This whiplash ending feels like Children of Anguish sat on her desktop for 3 years and the publishers said, "nah girl, we needed that yesterday- whatever you got we can have a ghostwriter finish, but it's gotta be in asap."
I do feel, with this final conclusion, if someone wants to start the series it is worth reading- where Virtue made me take it completely off my suggestion list.
I'm truly sad for Children of Blood and Bone, but deeply appreciate that we have a better conclusion for what had potential to be in my top five favorite series.
I'm excited to read everyone's thoughts.

Revisado: 04-14-25
I am unaware if I loved this book more because the film has been such a large part of my childhood, or if I would have loved it regardless. If anything, the film adaption is outstanding as far as condensing things down and keeping true to the original beloved tale. Although I was hoping for a few more definitive answers than given, I am enchanted at the mysterious lore Beagle hands us.
The clock, the unicorns in the sea, the bull, ....all of it will forever be a piece of me and I adored just simply having more of it to hold.
I am truly excited to look into Beagles other tales and writings (although I tend to really never love novellas much), because I am forever intoxicated by this world he conjures.

Sad but Good
Revisado: 04-09-25
Gary D. Schmidt is such a diamond in the rough among the Contemporary, middle-grade and young adult writers. Jupiter Rising is a continuation of his famous book Orbiting Jupiter. Although I didn't "need" this to feel settled after book one, having an extra window into the life of Jack was nice.
This, like most every book Schmidt pens will tug at your heart strings.
I did find this one a bit redundant or overly dramatic at times. Mostly with the mid conclusion, it is jus disproportionally unbelievable, however, I enjoyed my time reading.

Historia
Every night, in the college’s ancient cemetery, five people cross paths as they work the late shift: a bartender, a rideshare driver, a hotel receptionist, the steward of the derelict church that looms over them, and the editor-in-chief of the college paper, always in search of a story. One dark October evening in the defunct churchyard, they find a hole that wasn’t there before. A fresh, open grave where no grave should be. But who dug it, and for whom?

Was disappointed it is a novella
Revisado: 04-09-25
As with all Rio books you will get a strong cast, a bit of an ambiguous ending, and a lovely mix of emotions.
I struggle with most novellas, this one included. I don't mind a solid short story, but I don't prefer a story that feels as though it would work better as a full fledged story. I tell myself I won't buy novellas, however, when I love an author and it's the only format they are currently offering I cave and check them out. With all things Rio, Bardugo, Miller, Schwab, and Morgenstern - I will read it if she writes it.
It's fine. I'm Fine.
I appreciated the discussion of insomnia, as I have (like Rio herself) struggled with insomnia my entire life. It really is a cumbersome and futile fight to live amongst the healthy while being entirely so sleep deprived its hard to eat, drive, or function. Irony of irony was reading this book by audio at 2 am, while I painting- bc I couldn't sleep.
....you and me both Rio <3
This is a fun story to read on a porch, bundled in blanket, with a pumpkin to your right and a dog at your feet. *if you are not utilizing the audio format I highly suggest using her spotify playlist she includes so every part will feels a bit extra moody and spooky.
Excited for her next full length novel!

I loved the backstories and extra info. It's fun for those invested in the world.
Some of this gets a bit daunting over audio- like the reading of each wand or animal. Backgrounds on the beloved characters are why I am giving this four stars instead of three.

When Redwall was published in 1987 it catapulted author Brian Jacques to international stardom. And small wonder! This enthralling tale is jam-packed with the things we long for in a great adventure: danger, laughter, hairbreadth escapes, tragedy, mystery, a touch of wonder, a truly despicable villain, and a hero we can take to heart.

They are Mice in an Abbey, I set my bar too high
Revisado: 03-21-25
It's cozy core- with just an extreme lack of action. I struggled with this as a kid and hoped I had grown out of it as an adult. These books are good, they are just a bit slow for my personal taste. I can't believe how long it took me to get through this. I even started two other books during my reading of it, which is very unlike me.
I will say, it's a nice book to cook too. Again, feeling that cozy core vibe even if a bit dull. I never really feel like I miss anything if I am checking a recipe. They are mice monks in an abbey... idk why I anticipated more action. that's on me. The mice are sweet. I enjoy the characters, it's just by no means exciting!
