Historia
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

My cat's favorite audio book
Revisado: 11-18-23
I don't know why, but this is my cat's favorite audiobook. I play it for her when she's stressed, and she chills out. She screamed for an hour in the car before I gave up and put it on. The rest of the four hours she was quiet and content.

A poignant Episode
Revisado: 08-06-23
This episode hits different. Sure it's horror still, but it just hits different. There's a few episodes in podcasts I'll keep on my device well after finishing the season just so I can relisten to it, and this is one of them.

Historia
During the year 1866, ships of several nations spot a mysterious sea monster, which some suggest to be a giant narwhal. The United States government assembles an expedition in New York City to find and destroy the monster. Professor Pierre Aronnax, a French marine biologist and narrator of the story, who happens to be in New York at the time, receives a last-minute invitation to join the expedition which he accepts. Canadian whaler and master harpoonist Ned Land and Aronnax's faithful servant Conseil are also brought aboard.

not what I expected
Revisado: 10-20-22
I would not have been able to read the book through with the lengthy descriptions, but by listening to it I was able to enjoy what a huge nerd Jules Vern is.

DAYUMN!

Half way through I was already hoping for a sequel. It's a delightful mix of "you get em girl!" and "oooh big robot!"

Historia
In the town of Night Vale, there’s a faceless old woman who secretly lives in everyone’s home, but no one knows how she got there or where she came from...until now. Told in a series of eerie flashbacks, the story of The Faceless Old Woman goes back centuries to reveal an initially blissful and then tragic childhood on a Mediterranean Estate in the early 19th century, her rise in the criminal underworld of Europe, a nautical adventure with a mysterious organization of smugglers, her plot for revenge on the ones who betrayed her, and ultimately her death and its aftermath.

I regret everything.
Revisado: 04-10-20
If you like horror, unsatisfied revenge, and monstrous main characters, this book is for you. I mean it. If I liked any of that, this would be my favorite book. I hate all of those things. This book is not for me. I had less than an hour and a half left in the book when I just couldn't keep going. It's another wonderful book with a well written tale, but it's deeply unsatisfying. It makes me sick to my stomach. It is NOT LIKE the previous Night Vale novels. I preordered it shortly after It Devours and, I regret it. It's a story about revenge that is never satisfied. About a woman who becomes a monster and blames someone else for it. Yes, she was manipulated, but she goes far beyond. The things she does makes me sick. It keeps me up at night. I genuinely expected something more weird and light hearted like a giant centipede eating Night Vale again, or something like the pod cast not... Legitimate horror. I guess it's my own fault for preordering without looking up any details but... I wish there was a way to remove this book from my library. I have a compulsion to finish all books I start, and I just can't keep going...

Historia
Fascinated by our pervasive terror of dead bodies, mortician Caitlin Doughty set out to discover how other cultures care for their dead. In rural Indonesia, she observes a man clean and dress his grandfather's mummified body. Grandpa's mummy has lived in the family home for two years, where the family has maintained a warm and respectful relationship. She meets Bolivian natitas (cigarette-smoking, wish-granting human skulls) and introduces us to a Japanese kotsuage.

Excellent-- entertaining and educational
Revisado: 10-18-19
Long time fan of Doughty's work, and her audio books are no different. Her respectful insight into other cultures and our own have helped me think about the end of my life with a good humor and almost morbid excitement. I know what I want done with my corpse! Do you?
