Historia
Meticulously researched, and superbly imagined, The Commoner is the mesmerizing, moving, and surprising story of a brutally rarefied and controlled existence, at once hidden and exposed, and of a complex relationship between two isolated women who, despite being visible to all, are truly understood only by each other.

Well done.

I had no idea what to expect when I started this selection front my book club. Still, it wasn’t what I expected. A look into the life of the Japanese royal family. It was mesmerizing and emotionally kind of suffocating with exquisite detail which was necessary to convey the emotional effect. I won’t give away details, but I will say I’m glad my life bears no resemblance to that of our heroine.

Mostly good
Revisado: 08-07-22
Well paced and gripping. I wasn’t a fan of the voice of the reader, but I was gripped by the speed of the switchbacks in the story. Koontz surely knows how to write a gripping saga. What I didn’t like was the insertion of graphic sex in one chapter. It was as if it belonged in a whole different book. I couldn’t really like the heroine, though I guess that wasn’t important. I was never sure of the outcome until the very end. But,I’m not so sure that really was the real end. I feel like there still could be more…

Enjoyed it
Revisado: 12-03-20
I really enjoyed this and I wish I could’ve given it five stars, but I just couldn’t.
I lived in Key West for a short time in the 1960s and yet I’ve never heard about this dreadful hurricane. It was very interesting. I thought the characters were good, too. I thought that Mirtha sounded too old, but it was good that her voice was so different from the others.
I recommend it to anybody who wants a book that’s a little bit different, but a comfortable book to listen too – and enlightening too.
