Historia
England, 1914. The world is at war. Captain Hastings, injured and shaken, is invited to Styles Court to recover. It’s a grand old country house - the family home of his old friend - and a perfect haven. Or so it seems. But in the blistering summer heat, trouble is afoot. Simmering tensions are tearing the family apart, and it all comes to a head in the most horrifying way.

Amazing performances
Revisado: 02-08-25
I listen to a lot do audible books. No matter how good the content is a narrator can ruin the listening experience. Case in point - I couldn’t get past the first five minutes of crazy Rich Asians because of the annoying narrator. In this case, the performance elevated the story (I’m not a huge Agatha Christie fan)
I’m sure it’s much more expensive to produce but I hope more audiobooks go this route…except the ones narrated by Eduardo Ballerini. I could listen to him all day.

Terrible narration
Revisado: 11-08-24
I was so interested in this book that I gave it three tries but the narrator made it impossible to enjoy.
I am going to buy the book because I heard it is a good story but I kept zoning out. It’s not enough to have a plummy English accent. You neee a narrator who doesn’t deliver every line the same way.

This needed an editor
Revisado: 05-30-20
The content of this audible book might have been useful...IF you can get through the ridiculous number of quotation attributions.
Gitomer will quote himself...and then say "Jeffrey Gitomer," as if the listener didn't realize Gitomer was responsible for the pearls of wisdom. We know he wrote the book. We know he is the narrator. We get it. After awhile, I couldn't take it anymore. Every few minutes, Gitomer would say something relatively pithy and then say "Jeffrey Gitomer," It was unbearable. The audio editor should have insisted that he take it out but anyone who is so full of himself to think that he should narrate his own book on how to get "sh*t" done probably doesn't take direction well. Pass

How did this get good reviews?
Revisado: 05-30-20
I tried multiple times to get past the first few chapters. Brick’s voice was so monotone he turned action packed paragraphs into snoozefests.
I have listened to his narration before and it hasn’t bothered me but this is his worst effort. Now, I only play this audible book if I have trouble going to sleep. The plot may be good but I never got far enough into the story to tell.

Historia
A debut novel in the vein of Greene and le Carré, A Dying Breed is a brilliant and gripping story of the politics of news reporting, intrigue and blood set between the dark halls of Whitehall, the shadowy corridors of the BBC and the perilous streets of Kabul, in the shadowy le Carré-esque world of foreign correspondents reporting from war zones around the world. Carver, an old BBC hack, is warned off a story when a bomb goes off, killing a local official in Kabul, but his instincts tell him something isn't quite right....

Love the narrator’s voice but I listened to it at 1.25 speed because I prefer a quicker pace.
You have to pay attention because the details are important and it is easy to get the characters mixed up. Big thumbs up

The narrator saved this
Revisado: 07-31-17
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I keep giving James Patterson a chance but this story was weak.
How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?
How about some real character development? It was so unrealistic. The main character was so clueless it was hard to believe that he evert solved a crime in his life.
Have you listened to any of Edoardo Ballerini’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
His lilting italian sounds much more meaty American. But I love the fact that that he doesn't do irritating falsetto voices but manages to transition from character to character without making them sounds cartoonish.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
No. This is a short story masquerading as a novel.

I so wanted to like this
Revisado: 12-19-16
Would you try another book from Kevin Kwan and/or Lynn Chen?
As a rule, I try to support all Asian-American artists/writers. I was so happy to hear that Kevin Kwan had broken through the glass ceiling and created a blockbuster franchise. Unfortunately, I could not stand the characters he portrayed in this book. They were all so one dimensional. You could see what was coming from the start.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I was not a fan of this narrator. First of all, she mispronounced words..saying amma instead of Um-ma. Little things that made me realize that this woman must have had no one supervising her reading...or if she did, no one who knew more than she did.
Could you see Crazy Rich Asians being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
I definitely see this being made into a movie. Unfortunately, thanks to whitewashing, I thin they would all be caucasian actors. Since there aren't that many well-known Asian-American actors to choose from, this would be my list.
Daniel Dae Kim, Constance Wu, John Cho, Sung Kang BD Wong, Lucy Liu, Yunjin Kim, Jenna Ushkowitz, Margaret Cho, KEN JEONG, Russel Wong, Will Lee, the hot professor from Gender Now (GFGTD on Bravo)
Any additional comments?
I don't think i would like any book that focused on such a tedious group of privileged elitists. If you like these kinds of novels, go for it.

I love Simon Vance's voice so much I select the books he narrates. I thought the storyline was ok. It took 3/4 of the book to set up the plot and then the author wrapped all up a little too neatly and quickly.

Revisado: 02-10-15
Would you try another book from D. C. Gonzalez and/or D. C. Gonzalez?
I would not try another book from this author. I buy audible books to listen to while I run.
So as long as the narrator and substance is not deadly boring or useless I will try to get through it. There is nothing revelatory here. Nothing new, even. I give Gonzalez credit for trying to take material you can find in any book on self help buddhism and trying to give it some zip by adding personal anecdotes. Sadly, the anecdotes of how he utilized the lessons in his own life did not ring true...at all. In fact, some of his recollections of conversations he had seemed like they had been dipped in Disney magic....a happy ending in every situation...evil, selfish people transformed by simple gestures toward understanding and friendship. It sounded like hooey to me.
What do you think your next listen will be?
