Historia
The war on the Eastern Front from 1941 to 1945 was the bloodiest combat theater in the bloodiest war in history. Oberleutnant Friedrich Wilhelm Sander experienced this bloodshed firsthand when serving with the 11th Panzer-Regiment. This regiment made up the core of the 6th Panzer-Division, one of Hitler's top armored formations, which was involved in most of the major campaigns on the Eastern Front; campaigns such as Operation Barbarossa and Operation Winter Storm.

I was looking forward to entries as they ramped up for war, during the outbreak, and then on and after D-day, but there's nothing from those time frames at all. With that said, I really liked it. It's an fascinating, raw, and unfiltered insight into an officer's point of view, before and during the war.

Historia
Twilight of the Gods is a riveting account of the harrowing last year of World War II in the Pacific, when the US Navy won the largest naval battle in history; MacArthur made good his pledge to return to the Philippines; waves of kamikazes attacked the Allied fleets; the Japanese fought to the last man on one island after another; B-29 bombers burned down Japanese cities; and Hiroshima and Nagasaki were vaporized. Toll's narratives of combat in the air, at sea, and on the beaches are gripping, but he also takes the listener into the halls of power in Washington and Tokyo.

It Doesn't Get Better Than This (The Entire Series)
Revisado: 06-16-24
I've read and/or listened to untold numbers of books related to WWII. I didn't think I could enjoy a book (or a series of books) covering the war on such a grand scale. I was so wrong! All three books are incredible and kept me interested all the way through. Ian Toll is a masterful writer and the narration was up to par.

Historia
The devastation of Pearl Harbor and the American victory at Midway were prelude to a greater challenge: rolling back the vast Japanese Pacific empire island by island. This masterful history encompasses the heart of the Pacific War - the period between mid-1942 and mid-1944 - when parallel Allied counteroffensives north and south of the equator washed over Japan's far-flung island empire like a "conquering tide", concluding with Japan's irreversible strategic defeat in the Marianas.

Great book, but it relies too heavily on the PDF.
Revisado: 02-10-24
As mentioned in the title, I really liked the book, but it relies to heavily on the PDF for it to be an audiobook. You're definitely not getting the most of this book if you're listening while you're driving, as I'm often doing. Some books just are not meant to be audiobooks.

Relying on his own letters home and recollections he penned just after his discharge, Webster gives a firsthand account of life in E Company, 101st Airborne Division, crafting a memoir that resonates with the immediacy of a gripping novel.

Great book and performance.
Revisado: 09-14-23
My only issue was that I cringed every time the narrator incorrectly pronounced Bill Guarnere's last name. Interestingly enough, he pronounces it the exact same way that the narrator pronounces it in the Band of Brothers audiobook, and it's not even the same narrator. Otherwise, his narration is one of the best I've had the pleasure of listening to.

Revisado: 08-11-23
My main reason for writing this review is to point out that I didn't mind the author's narration at all. Sure, she's not a professional narrator, but those who say she sounds unnatural and makes all sorts of mistakes make me wonder if they were laser focused on her diction and not on the content. I didn't notice any glaring issues. She sounded as though she were doing a Ted Talk. I'm glad I listened to it.

Good follow up to a great book.
Revisado: 01-31-22
First, I know Joe Galloway's voice well enough that it was a distraction having him read a book that references him, but is written entirely from General Moore's point of view. I was constantly catching myself forgetting this.
Otherwise it was good, although some of it was redundant, for those who've already read "We Were Soldiers...", which I would imagine is everyone.

From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden.
