Historia
Relentless phone calls interrupt the peace of a warm August morning in Three Pines. Though the tiny Québec village is impossible to find on any map, someone has managed to track down Armand Gamache, head of homicide at the Sûreté, as he sits with his wife in their back garden. Reine-Marie watches with increasing unease as her husband refuses to pick up, though he clearly knows who is on the other end. When he finally answers, his rage shatters the calm of their quiet Sunday morning.

An attempt at AI writing?
Revisado: 11-01-24
Forcing myself to finish this book to give a full review became my goal midway through this book. The story began and progressed well, with some beautifully evocative turns of phrase. It was set beautifully in a place (Quebec, Canada) near a place that I lived for a decade years ago. At some point midway through the book, I started to notice that the writing had odd gaps in the story that felt like an editor just ripped out sections, or as if in review the plot was trimmed to meet a more favorable word or page length. The plot and story are quite good in concept, and could have supported a substantially longer book, and possibly a suitable series of books with room to expand and deepen the plot. The last few chapters seemed a bit disjointed and questionably accurate in their details. Whoever the writer or writers, they kept them open to suspicion by not making sure to make the plot a fully developed one, and not leaving room for confusion and a feeling of having several ideas be left to fall away without explanation. This book seems to have needed as much effort on follow through as was clearly intended by the introduction and beginning of the story. I hope that as much time as I used to try to give a detailed description of the problems will allow the author and the publisher will help in making improvements to future book in this and all genres. As readers in the West grow healthier and more long-lived, hopefully the books available for sale will be written with an eye to longevity, too.

Historia
A commander who bled to defend her people, Ahnna is haunted by two beliefs. The first is that she failed to protect Ithicana from invasion. And the second is that saving her homeland means leaving it behind forever. The Maridrinians left Ithicana in ruins and its people impoverished. So when the wealthy kingdom of Harendell claims her as a bride for its crown prince, Ahnna is prepared to do whatever it takes to gain influence as the future queen. And to control the gold that comes with the throne.

Ending on a hopeless and tragic end felt worse than a waste of time.
Revisado: 10-20-24
The good use of writing skill should have been better. The scale seemed epic, but the bleak ending felt like a calculated intention to disappoint or turn away readers. Feels disappointing to be left wishing the time spent reading/listening was wasted.

Historia
Since the days of conquistador Hernán Cortés, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die.

Tremendous Words - Thanks
Revisado: 09-17-23
I love the way this author skillfully led from an Indians Jones-type adventure to an empathetic cautionary tale, from gold & jewels & mystery to pondering an all too real apocalyptic possibility with a call to wake up our international apathy in the face of a real risk. Time to ponder real life & real actions with a hope & plan for real consequences of a change in trajectory.

Looking up to a fantastic musician with a lifelong body of work is excellent. My lower rating is only because of my own lack of identifying with the artist, which kept me from finishing it. I wasn't looking for gossip, just an understanding of his psychology, more than a diary. For me, it seems better for artists to either work with a psychologist within a contract to restrict what can and can NOT be disclosed. Fans will get all the artist is willing to reveal, which seems fair for someone who sold much of their life to express their deepest emotions in order to find a way to live comfortably as long as they are able to work, in one of the most stress/filled industries on the planet. I give top stars for Bowie's body of work, but I am not one who is a "groupie" but IS an admirer of myth-making work. Bowie was a rare genius, and I hope a book will give more of a feel for that, than an exposé, that seems to be what readers want. I hope Bowie's legend does keep inspiring and teaching new artists who do the work to study him.

Deep down here by the dark water lived old Gollum, a small slimy creature. I don’t know where he came from, nor who or what he was. He was Gollum—as dark as darkness, except for two big round pale eyes in his thin face. He had a little boat, and he rowed about quite quietly on the lake; for lake it was, wide and deep and deadly cold.

Sorry, but I'm too old for this type of writing, which feels too young in attitude and language. Having a male voice reading a book with a female on the cover art seems too artificial and planned (for greater profit, presumably). I need to find books with more maturity, as I am feeling as old as dirt these days. Suspect this would be perfect for young dudes who enjoy this genre. 😟

Complexity, best double entendrés in decades of YA genre read by one who was a YA decades ago, but prefers less profanity and sexual themes while enjoying teasing but not wanting to have the topic as "in your face as older teens and YA may prefer.

Most witches have a coven. Not me. For me, the protection a coven offers does not outweigh the risk of being discovered. I've worked odd jobs here and there peddling (mostly) legal potions I brew when I can. But when an opportunity to work for the vampires fell in my lap, I took it. I heal the people they feed on and don't ask too many questions. After less than six months working this gig, a girl turns up dead, drained of blood. Of course, I am the first person the police pay a visit to.

Cat Lovers' Award 🐈
Revisado: 01-30-23
Tremendous job of voicing a properly superlatively supercilious inner voice for a cat with. the ability to booth encourage and deftly guide a precocious wizard who also happens to be over-anxious about keeping up appearances that are appropriately presumed by a young woman who believes everyone around her is either judging her for her own perceived flaws or is trying to point out or correct the flaws of those around her. A young lady dreaming to be a teacher with a pet, both of them with precocious magic. Lovely!
