Historia
Former soldier. Ex-copper. Current man on the edge. Shunned by his old colleagues, and dividing his time between a dead-end job and the bottom of a whisky bottle, former Police Scotland detective superintendent Bob Hoon’s life is a mess. Then an old face from Hoon’s Special Forces days turns up asking for help: His teenage daughter has been missing for months, the police have drawn a blank, and he needs the kind of help that only Hoon can provide. And besides, Hoon owes him one.

Gritty & well written
Revisado: 11-11-24
The characters are interesting although over the top at times. The banter a bit negative and the novel a bit dark but it is a well written detective spy novel.

So much potential, but fell short
Revisado: 07-07-24
At less than 7 hours Sanchez had lots of time to invest more pages in developing her characters and plots more thoroughly. The story felt disjointed, needing more flesh to better develop the plot and characters, to tie different parts together. There is potential in the story line and future books, I recognize that by the time I found and listened to this book the author has over 17 books to his credit, I can only hope he has done a better job or I won't be continuing for long.

Historia
Instability and fear seize the nation. Local and national political figures are systematically assassinated. A growing secessionist movement stirs up anti-government fervor. The combination creates nationwide unrest and lack of confidence in leadership. With the clock ticking toward a monumental constitutional crisis, President Morgan Taylor assigns Secret Service Agent Scott Roarke to investigate the assassinations. Meanwhile, Roarke’s fiancée, an assistant to the US Supreme Court Chief Justice, is tasked with researching the separatists.

In Need of Good Editor
Revisado: 07-07-24
The story has lots of parts with different time lines, bouncing from current to past, or past to current - it works. However, the level of detail of a weapon or military bases should have been more heavily edited. Grossman seems more comfortable writing about weapons, locations, and law than developing the characters. They are often flat barely 2 dimensional and not developed enough for me to really care about them. I have listened to other books in this series but this is the last one.

My name is Charlotte Locke, and I’m an analyst for Section 47, a secret government agency that tracks terrorists, criminals, and other paramortal bad guys who want to unleash their abilities on an unsuspecting mortal world. I have a magical form of synesthesia that senses danger and uncovers lies - making me a stealthy operative. I’m trudging through another day when one of Section’s cleaners - assassins - takes an interest in me. I don’t need my synesthesia to realize that he is extremely dangerous.

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 07-04-24
Not sure what I expected but this wasn't it. This is a nice interesting twisty fantasy detective type story with interesting characters. Very enjoyable. Laser did a good job performing but Cartwright - OMG, I needed to speed it up when he was narrating. Overall I enjoyed this so much i quickly downloaded book 2 - don't bother. The second book feels abridged and lacks the detail and twists of the first book.

Historia
Most spies take a break for the holidays, but not me, Charlotte Locke. As an analyst for Section 47, a secret spy organization, I normally use my magical form of synesthesia to uncover lies and track paramortal criminals from the comfort of my cubicle. But tonight I’m going out into the field, along with my partner, Desmond Percy, a powerful galvanist. Instead of enjoying Christmastime in the city, I’m in a German castle, dressed like a toy soldier and masquerading as a waitress at a swanky Christmas Eve party.

Feels Abridged - Unsatisfying
Revisado: 06-26-24
I enjoyed the first book, it was enjoyable and fun, this book not so much. Story and characters are not well fleshed out, I felt cheated since I had expected more like the first book in the series - more like a 'full' novel. Totally unsatisfying - a cheap story. Improvement on the narrator/performance by Lance Danton for Dundee compared to Grant Cartwright (who I thought was awful).

Not What I Expected
Revisado: 10-28-23
The story bounces back and forth between the past and present. At first I was confused but after a few chapters I finally understood what was happening and settled in to a well written and well performed story. Loved the character development, the twists, the complications. This is the first book I have listened to by this author, I am going to go try another.

Will It Ever End?
Revisado: 10-10-23
I kept waiting and waiting for the story to take off. Everytime it started to move the authors rehashed yet again details that had been repeated earlier. This book is in need of a good editor. It is slow slow slow. I almost never speed up a book, esp with Scott Brick but I had to. More than once I considered not finishing but I was stuck on a long drive. This is the first and only book I have listened to by these authors and I won't be listening to any more. Save yourself 20 hours and listen to the Grey Man, Orphan X, Reacher, Mitch Rapp, and many more.

Exciting Surprise
Revisado: 08-31-23
I picked up this book during the get 2 for 1 credit sale and wow what a nice surprise. I have been looking for a new author after being caught up on all my favorites. Great character development, interesting plot, story moves along beautifully, and is well written. The narrator does a good job as well. Could hardly stop listening. Downloading the next book. I recommend without hesitation if you like a good espionage story with good character development.

Series is deteriorating along with narration
Revisado: 08-12-23
The first book in the series was the best, the second not bad, the third good enough the 4th well lets just say I won't be listening to a fifth. The character development has stalled, they are now just pawns to move the story forward so create a chance for another fight or chase, the reader is no longer connected with the characters. Oh there are moments but they aren't developed enough, just cursory and fleeting. The plot is not new, much of it 'reads' like an action movie with one fight or chase scene after another. The dialogue that the narrator did made me cringe. Adam Grupper's approach with dialogue is to be gruff, abrupt, dispassionate, rushed for all but Peter's character. It doesn't help the listener to connect with or cheer on Michael, Girl in Black, Knight, the tech ... Gruppers reading of the 'text' and not dialogue is good but he ruins it with his performance of any dialogue. Unlike the Orphan X or Grey Man series where the characters grow and there are more nuances to events this is a sledge hammer of a story pounding through the plot. I finished totally unsatisfied and even a bit pissed.

Hope for the best but plan to be a bit disappointed
Revisado: 08-08-23
My biggest complaint about the first 2 books are the villains. They are comic bookish and totally unrealistic. Rich guys wanting to rule the world and mentally deranged. This is not to imply that other parts of the books aren’t unrealistic but they are pulled off better. The writing is good, pace good, mix bag on characters… Audible indicates there are 3 more books in the series but as of writing this they aren’t available. I am unsure if I will get them; definitely not if the villains don’t improve
