Historia
Fiona Maye is a leading High Court judge, presiding over cases in the family court. She is renowned for her fierce intelligence, exactitude and sensitivity. But her professional success belies private sorrow and domestic strife. There is the lingering regret of her childlessness, and now her marriage of 30 years is in crisis. At the same time, she is called on to try an urgent case: for religious reasons, a beautiful 17-year-old boy, Adam, is refusing the medical treatment that could save his life, and his devout parents share his wishes. Time is running out.

An Absolute Gem
Revisado: 10-12-14
I read and listen to quite a lot of books. I usually don't write reviews. I feel compelled to do so here, This book is fantastic. The narration is superb, The book is only short but the story and the writing are memorable. I don't always like Ian McEwan. He can be pretentious and put out stuff that relies on reputation. This is different. This will help cement his reputation. There will have to be a special book out there if this one is headed off at Booker Prize time!!

Historia
The Quality of Mercy opens in the spring of 1767, two years after the events of Barry Unsworth's Booker Prize-winning Sacred Hunger. It follows the fortunes of two central characters from that book: Sullivan, the Irish fiddler, and Erasmus Kemp, the son of a Liverpool slave-ship owner who hanged himself. To avenge his father's death, Erasmus Kemp has had the rebellious sailors of his father's ship, including Sullivan, brought back to London to stand trial on charges of mutiny and piracy.

Another Great Unsworth Book
Revisado: 04-26-12
Although it is over 20 years ago that Barry Unsworth wrote Sacred Hunger this is the belated sequel to it. To get full pleasure from this book you really need to have read/listened to Sacred Hunger. However this book develops into a great story in its own right. New characters are introduced and new story lines are developed. The narration by David Rintoul is superb. The only slightly disappointing aspect is the rather abrupt ending. Perhaps Barry U is just setting us up for a third in the series ...!!!! I hope so.

1752, the Liverpool Merchant sets sail from Merseyside. A slaver, she is bound for Africa to buy men and transport them in chains across the Atlantic. But aboard ship disease thrives in the cramped hold, killing men and eating into profit. Captain Thurso insists on throwing the sick overboard, to the horror of Matthew Paris, ship's surgeon, who determines to prevent such barbarity. Meanwhile, back home, Erasmus Kemp, cousin of Paris and son of the Liverpool Merchant's owner, finds his fortune hanging in the balance: dependent on the success or failure of a single voyage....

Magnificent
Revisado: 10-01-11
This book is magnificent. The writing of Karl Malantes and the narration by Jeff Harding combine to make this a very special experience. From the beginning to the end it is as if the listener is an adjunct member of Bravo Company in the jungles of Vietnam. The fear, the squalour, the bravery and the comradeship are all there. No punches are pulled.Whether it deals with battle, commanding officers or race relations the story and presentation is realistic and unrelenting.Of the many dozens of Audible books I have listened to this one is amongst the very best.

Historia
Mr George Smiley is small, podgy, and at best, middle-aged. He is disillusioned, wrestles with idleness, and has been deserted by his beautiful wife. He is also compassionate, ruthless and a senior British intelligence officer in short-lived retirement from the Circus the British Secret Service organisation situated in London. But Moscow centre has infiltrated a mole into the Circus and it’s more than likely that the perpetrator is Karla Smiley’s old adversary and his opposite number in Moscow.

Top Narration
Revisado: 05-02-11
I really enjoyed the narration of this book by Michael Jayston. I had previously downloaded the same book from Audible read by a different narrator. I couldn't finish it due to my thorough dislike of that narrators reading style. I knew there was a wonderful book hiding in there waiting to be revealed and the narration of Jayston was the revelation. I will now look forward to listening to the large number of the other Le Carre books he also narrates.

Historia
One of the best selling History titles of 2009. Examining the Second World War on every front, Andrew Roberts asks whether, with a different decision-making process and a different strategy, Hitler’s Axis might even have won. Were those German generals who blamed everything on Hitler after the war correct, or were they merely scapegoating their former Führer once he was safely beyond defending himself?

Outstanding
Revisado: 04-04-11
I have listened to dozens of books on Audible and this is one of the very best.If you have an interest in WWII you will thoroughly enjoy this book. While the emphasis is on Europe the Pacific War is well covered. Christian Rodska is a perfect reader for this. The battles, the horrors, the personalities and the politics are all comprehensively dealt with. A totally engrossing book that I am sure you will appreciate as much as I did.

Repetitious
Revisado: 12-13-10
It has taken me years to get around to this book. I actually quite enjoyed it although at 41 hours Mr Follett has made it twice as long as it needed to be. Many of the themes were repetitious and similar life stories seemed to apply to quite a few of the characters. I have always liked John Lee as a narrator. He saved the book for me.

Revisado: 01-09-10
I thoroughly enjoed " The Secret River " by the same author. I was disappointed by this book. Descriptively it was fine but in the end the story line is weak. I am sure someone of Kate Grenville's ability can do a lot better than this.
