This book was a hard lesson, because you want to root for the main characters at all times, and it’s difficult when they are fallible humans like the rest of us. There are a lot of reviews that are very critical of the storyline, mostly because of this point, as well as the new narrator. I read the reviews before listening to the book, and have a different perspective. I think it is just the author’s misfortune that the new narrator came on at the same time as this difficult story for the main character. Facing the challenge of a new voice, giving life to the characters were so familiar after all the other books along with our disappointment, and some of the main characters choices was a bit of a double whammy. However, on reflection, I was used to the new narrator by the end of the book, and I appreciate the authors efforts in creating characters who struggle like all of the rest of us. The detail around the struggles was at times painful, but always believable. I find myself wishing the next book wouldn’t be so dark, and then laughing at myself because darkness is exactly what one gets when one readsmurder mysteries. All in law, I think this book was a worthwhile use of my time.

This book grabbed me at the beginning and never let go. The backstory from the 20s was horrific but believable, outlining how much damage a hateful person can bring to future generations. There was a general air of hopelessness that was balanced by the firm optimism of the female lead character at the end, and wow, ending with a cliffhanger pretty much guarantees that the reader will go on to the next book. There was a red herring character that I suspect will become more central in the next story. Thomas’s character development was really good in this story as he finally learned to process his loss. I will definitely continue reading the series.

I was captivated by the story from the moment it began. All of the characters are so authentic and honestly portrayed. Their fears, their sometimes unfounded confidence, The way that each see the world through their own lens. They’re back stories unfold at I sometimes breathtaking, sometimes achingly, slow speed, but always, always moving towards resolution. There are so many small and instantly recognizable moments captured by this author that anyone who truly reflects on their own life can recognize. This book tosses the meaning of family up into the air like confetti and puts together the puzzle pieces that fall to the ground in a whole new way. I’m only sad that I finished it, because it held my attention completely while I was reading it. The narrator’s voice was perfect for the story, too. Five stars!
