Historia
The 1935 Labor Day hurricane annihilated between four hundred and six hundred lives in the middle of the Florida Keys, and like all disasters, both exposed long-standing social and economic inequities and reminded us of the bonds that enable us to provide what rescue we can for those we cherish. In this fictional account of the storm, rooted in the record but brought to life with Shepard’s unparalleled command of interpersonal impact, Village of Islands follows a handful of residents of a small beachside town in the moments leading up to, during and after this event.

Historia
In 2006, hedge fund manager John Paulson realized something few others suspected - that the housing market and the value of subprime mortgages were grossly inflated and headed for a major fall. Paulson's background was in mergers and acquisitions, however, and he knew little about real estate or how to wager against housing. He had spent a career as an also-ran on Wall Street. But Paulson was convinced this was his chance to make his mark. He just wasn't sure how to do it. Colleagues at investment banks scoffed at him and investors dismissed him.

Historia
When young orphan, Oliver Twist, is sold into an apprenticeship with an undertaker, he leaves behind years of miserable servitude and mistreatment at an English workhouse. Hoping to move on to better things, he decides to escape his new, equally dreary surroundings and head to London. It is there that the novel unravels as Oliver meets a host of larger-than-life characters, including The Artful Dodger, a high-ranking member of a juvenile pickpocketing gang, and their elderly leader, Fagin.

Valid and offensive
Revisado: 10-07-21
Learned nothing about life or living. Almost everyone was a stereotyped person. Poor are lazy. Middle class are virtuous. The ethnic stereotypes are particularly offensive. I know he's a product of his time, and his private reflects better on him, but I read the story today, and past stereotypes are still hurtful, even if, or perhaps particularly because, they have been pervasive throughout history.

Historia
Anna Issac's choices are bleak. Suicide is more appealing than marrying the revolting Frenchman her spiteful brother has chosen for her. The only other option is to beg a man she barely knows, a Highlander, to help her run away. Escape would be a challenge for any 15-year-old, but it is particularly difficult for a Jewess living in 17th century Scotland. Anna's tale would have remained a secret, except three centuries later the death of Hanna Duncan's father on 9/11 unleashes a chain of events that leads her to an ancient key with a peculiar etching.

Never knew about Caledonia. Interesting
Revisado: 08-16-21
SeEmed to stray as a story of relationships and family, but story turned out to be historical an Caledonia. Both were goog, but the mixing of them was mildly discombobulating at times. Story of Caledonia was very interesting. An song was rather quick and I'm not sure if all the threads were tied up.
Good narrator. The Scottish brogue was beautiful, and understandable. Not too heavy.

Seems like a cozy mystery with a guy for the main character. Characters fairly nice, stereotypes. Light hearted. Solution not obvious. Plot was to develop characters and witty dialog.

Shallow, predictable
Revisado: 08-12-21
1. I didn't like the narrator. Too much sing-song.
2. I sometimes like YOung Adult novels, but not this one (I'm not sure if it's considered YA. The plot actually seemed more suited to Elementary school except for references to marriage and sex (nothing bodacious, just "purity" and "looks to devour" - but maybe today's elementary kids are more sophisticated than I was many many years ago). I learned very little. I didn't like or dislike any of the characters. I wasn't moved. I kept thinking the ending could redeem it. It's an interesting premise. The ending didn't redeem the book.
