lit... not just Chick Lit
Revisado: 11-14-23
I avoid chick lit. My wife came with a hard copy of this from the book store. Having read some Julian Fellowes books and knowing something of the Mitfords, I looked for and found the Audible version.
Yes, it is a mystery and has those conventions. Yes, it is the first of the series and I knew how certain aspects would resolve. That said, I really enjoyed this book. I will take a week off and start the next one.

Historia
When level-headed Francie arrives in Roswell, New Mexico, for her college roommate’s UFO-themed wedding—complete with a true-believer bridegroom—she can’t help but roll her eyes at all the wide-eyed talk of aliens, which obviously don’t exist. Imagine her surprise, then, when she is abducted by one. Odder still, her abductor is far from what the popular media have led her to expect, with a body like a tumbleweed and a mass of lightning-fast tentacles. Nor is Francie the only victim of the alien’s abduction spree.

Historia
In no more than the blink of an eye, a naïve optimism about technology’s liberating potential has given way to a dystopian obsession with biased algorithms, surveillance capitalism, and job-displacing robots. System Error exposes the root of our current predicament - how big tech’s relentless focus on optimization is driving a future that reinforces discrimination, erodes privacy, displaces workers, and pollutes the information we get- and outlines steps we can take to change course, renew our democracy, and save ourselves.

they fail to deal with the downside of censoring speech. I would have loved to hear then discuss the censoring the New York Post stories on Hunter Biden's laptop.

Historia
August 1939: London is dismal under the weight of impending war with Germany as Hitler’s forces continue to sweep across Europe. Into this uncertain maelstrom steps Grace Bennett, young and ready for a fresh start in the bustling city streets she’s always dreamed of - and miles away from her troubled past in the countryside. With aspirations of working at a department store, Grace never imagined she’d wind up employed at Primrose Hill, an offbeat bookshop nestled in the heart of the city - after all, she’s never been much of a reader.

I clicked on this as a daily deal. I have about 1400 titles in my library and this is among my favorites. a poignant tale of a young single woman in the blitz. Yes, it is predictable, following well-loved formulas, but I just loved it. It is well-written and is great for the book-lovers of the world.

Historia
On July 27, 1996, a hapless former cop turned hypervigilant security guard named Richard Jewell spotted a suspicious bag in Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, the town square of the 1996 Summer Games. Inside was a bomb, the largest of its kind in FBI and ATF history. Minutes later, the bomb remotely detonated by the attacker amid a crowd of 50,000 people. But thanks to Jewell, it only killed two and wounded 111, not the hundreds who authorities estimated could have otherwise died. With the eyes of the world on Atlanta, the games continued.

A masterful work on a complex event
Revisado: 01-04-20
It might be that, after writing the story of Richard Jewel, the book was too short. Expanding it is usually a recipe for disaster. Here it worked. Beginning with the story of how Atlanta won the contest to host the Olympics and continuing through the dogged investigation to hunt down the actual bomber Alexander and Salwen create a document similar a Tom Wolfe novel.
The stories are riveting and I hope to read more from them. I rank the authors in a class with Michael Lewis (The Blind Side and Money Ball), which is the highest praise.
Paul Michael, the narrator is one of the best in the industry and is up to that standard on this book.

Historia
In this best-selling novel, Patrick D. Smith tells the story of three generations of the MacIveys, a Florida family who battle the hardships of the frontier to rise from a dirt-poor Cracker life to the wealth and standing of real estate tycoons. The story opens in 1858, when Tobias MacIvey arrives in the Florida wilderness to start a new life, and ends in 1968 with Solomon MacIvey, who realizes that the land has been exploited far beyond human need.

This is an accurate portrayal of Florida
Revisado: 01-02-19
First of all, this is a great story, well told. I loved the characters and rejoiced and mourned with them. That would make it good fiction if it was nothing but fantasy. The catch is that there is a boatload of actual truth in it.
I grew up in and live in Central Florida. My forebears stayed in Georgia and dealt with the devastation of the U.S. civil war. I have discussed this book with some of the foremost historians of Florida, and they assure me this is an accurate historical novel. The characters are fictitious, but the conduct and events are true. This is what the Florida crackers who were successful went through.

You can say goodbye to today's Internet, New York Times best-selling author George Gilder says. Soon the current model of aggregated free content populated with "value-subtracted" advertising will die a natural deat. In Life After Google, Gilder takes listeners on a brilliant, rocketing journey into the very near-future, into an Internet with a new "bitcoin-bitgold" transaction layer that will replace spam with seamless micro-payments and provide an all-new standard for global money.

this is not an easy read, but it, worth the effort
Revisado: 11-10-18
George Gilder is a fascinating riding, whether he is writing about the place of men in society, or technology. this is not an easy book. It will help if you have an elementary understanding of cryptography and understand the basics of Bitcoin and its blockchain. That being said, I think this is an important book and merits the effort. if you want some basic explanations on cryptography and Bitcoin, I would recommend the Security Now podcast at twit. TV. Start with episode 80 and when you finish the several shows on cryptography, go to episodes 287 and 643.
I always score in the idea of a futurist, but Gilder has been remarkably right on some of his past predictions. this review was dictated and I am too lazy to edit it.

A boring Moore novel.
Revisado: 04-29-18
At his best, Christopher Moore is a great author. I have read several of his books 3 or more times. About 1/3 of his works are disappointing. This one was simply boring. By the time I was 2/3rds through, I gave up and quit. I will pre-order his next book and expect something wickedly funny.
