Historia
For GBI investigator Will Trent and medical examiner Sara Linton, McAlpine Lodge seems like the ideal getaway to celebrate their honeymoon. Set on a gorgeous, off-the-grid mountaintop property, it’s the perfect place to unplug and reconnect. Until a bone-chilling scream cuts through the night. Mercy McAlpine, the manager of the Lodge, is dead. With a vicious storm raging and the one access road to the property washed out, the murderer must be someone on the mountain. But as Will and Sara investigate the McAlpine family and the other guests, they realize that everyone here is lying.

I’m an outlier on this one.
Revisado: 09-03-24
The reason I’ve listened to all the Will Trent books, is Will Trent. In this book, one could substitute any tall, strong, male, main character and it would read the same. It’s a good basis for the next episode on TV, but that’s not the reason I purchased it. And, yes, the fact that it was a locked room mystery was obvious without being mentioned, more than once, in the book.

Screaming and shrieking
Revisado: 07-07-24
This is often listed as one of Agatha Christie’s best novels and I totally agree. I understand that because there are so many characters, the narrator has to give them each their own voice, but the sharp shrieking and screaming makes this a difficult listen. Is this book available with a different narrator?

Intensity of relationships
Revisado: 07-06-24
I know that I will be thinking about this book for a long time. It’s a story about families, it’s a story about neighbors, it’s a story about countries - the similarities and the differences. But most of all, it’s a story about relationships. Does one have to read Brooklyn before this book? No, you don’t “have to” but it does deepen the character developments, even more.

This is the US version.
Revisado: 12-10-23
If you want to listen to this excellent book as it was written, skip the next to last chapter. During an interview, Liz Nugent explained that the US publishers considered the original UK version too dark for the states. Therefore, she added the letter in the next to last chapter. At first listen, I skipped it and felt it was the perfect ending. What do you think?

Historia
Valerie has been forgetting things. Her daughter worries about her being on her own in her big Victorian house—one rumored to be haunted after a tragedy decades earlier—and truth be told, she is a little lonely. With few options, she asks her adult son to move home, but it’s not quite the reunion she hoped for. Hudson is taciturn, moody, and frequently gone. The neighbors already hold a grudge against Hudson, and they aren’t happy about his return. When a young woman is found murdered a block away, suspicion falls on him immediately, without a shred of evidence.

It's ok
Revisado: 10-23-23
After reading a few reviews mentioning twists, I gave this one a try. Not my best decision. Did the author think that the many times the main character mentioned wearing low cut tight tops, short skirts and high heels shoes added to the story? A couple of hours in, I skipped to the end for the twists. Yawn.

Historia
Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre’s most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack - which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders". But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookstore in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She’s looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal’s old list. And the FBI agent isn’t the only one interested in this bookseller.

I almost didn't buy this book....
Revisado: 07-17-23
After reading many negative and mediocre reviews, I almost passed by this book, but I'm so glad I didn't. Of course, it's not going to win a pulitzer, or be best book of the year, but it was a really enjoyable experience. Possibly because I am familiar with most of the authors and books mentioned, it added to the story. If you are a fan of classic detective stories and are looking for a good book, this is the one

Amazing character development, soft spoke narrator
Revisado: 08-07-21
Yes, it's another Stephen King five star book, but it was so difficult to hear. I use speakers to listen to all my audio books, either in the house or in the car. I missed so much because the narrator did not project his voice. I can't imagine listening to this in the car with outside traffic noise.

Not a mystery
Revisado: 03-28-20
I was excited to listen to the newest Emily St. John Mandel novel and downloaded it on release day. I did not read any reviews, not wanting to spoil the story. However, in the process of buying it, I noticed it was classified as Mystery, Psychological . Hmmm. Yes, I enjoyed the book, not as much as Station Eleven, but still enjoyed it. Call it Historical Fiction, Literary Fiction or plain Fiction, but not Mystery.

Historia
When Barry Fairweather dies unexpectedly in his early 40s, the little town of Pagford is left in shock. Pagford is, seemingly, an English idyll, with a cobbled market square and an ancient abbey, but what lies behind the pretty façade is a town at war. Rich at war with poor, teenagers at war with their parents, wives at war with their husbands, teachers at war with their pupils.... Pagford is not what it at first seems. And the empty seat left by Barry on the town's council soon becomes the catalyst for the biggest war the town has yet seen.

Why didn't I listen to this sooner?
Revisado: 03-22-17
What I love in a book- literary fiction and character development. This story ticks off all the boxes. In the beginning, I did make a few notes - who is related to whom, how they are interrelated. It helped as the story progressed.
But, I must confess, it reminded me why I no love longer live in a small town
