Historia
It was a mild May morning in Charleston, South Carolina, in 1862, the second year of the Civil War, when a 23-year-old slave named Robert Smalls did the unthinkable and boldly seized a Confederate steamer. With his wife and two young children hidden on board, Smalls and a small crew ran a gauntlet of heavily armed fortifications in Charleston Harbor and delivered the valuable vessel and the massive guns it carried to nearby Union forces.

Required reading for BHM and for Americans
Revisado: 02-21-23
Well written book about a man who exemplifies the “American” experience. Truly great listen/read for BHM. Am motivated for more details post-Civil War - the longer challenge of fighting the simmering conflict of the late 19th century.
Would be a great epic series as well.

Complete History
Revisado: 12-24-22
A very complete and well balanced history of the US during a transformational time. History doesn’t repeat, but it rhymes and lessons can help inform current problems. The country moved forward through individual actions and erudite public policy. Government exists to improve our situation and the US system is configured to do just that, if we’re willing to work for that outcome,

Historia
The US Army entered World War II unprepared. Lacking Germany's blitzkrieg approach of coordinated armor and air power, the army was organized to fight two wars: one on the ground and one in the air. Previous commentators have blamed Congressional funding and public apathy for the army's unprepared state. David E. Johnson believes instead that the principal causes were internal: army culture and bureaucracy, and their combined impact on the development of weapons and doctrine.

Good overview of key Tech and war
Revisado: 12-12-22
Most interesting and compelling conclusion (observation): the Air Force has a solid history of prioritizing technology and material over people. We MUST buy the tech, we can find people to use it.
The Army went the opposite - keep the people (especially leaders) and they’ll figure the ways to employ the tech.
Additionally - theory seldom matches reality. Must have flexibility in thought to adjust when the virtual meets the visceral.

Historia
In 1929 Stalin launched his policy of agricultural collectivization - in effect a second Russian Revolution - which forced millions of peasants off their land and onto collective farms. The result was a catastrophic famine, the most lethal in European history. At least five million people died between 1931 and 1933 in the USSR. But instead of sending relief, the Soviet state made use of the catastrophe to rid itself of a political problem.

The anatomy of a tragedy
Revisado: 12-09-22
Applebaum does a masterful job of describing the holodomor and its affects today. Highly recommend this book for anyone seeking to know more about the activities of the USSR in attempting to force communism on a society, and how autocrats can exacerbate and amplify bureaucratic evil.

The Magna Carta is revered around the world as the founding document of Western liberty. Its principles - even its language - can be found in our Bill of Rights and in the Constitution. But what was this strange document and how did it gain such legendary status? Dan Jones takes us back to the turbulent year of 1215, when, beset by foreign crises and cornered by a growing domestic rebellion, King John reluctantly agreed to fix his seal to a document that would change the course of history.
