Reader was nearly as frustrated as heroine Joan to see her and the Prince united. But this was the author’s intent and talent: creating tension throughout the novel. One correction though: The Wash is on the East Coast of England, not the West.

Anne Perry reaches a pinnacle of perfection in revealing character and plot. This is attorney Rathbone’s comeuppance and his deliverance. Perry delves deeply into his moral makeup and his conscience and allows readers to identify with his struggles. Despite our many strengths we are fallible and have lessons to learn. The author has a gift with her insights into the human heart and mind, shown more keenly in Blind Justice than all the prior books in her Inspector Monk series. As narrator, Ms Porter does a superb job of nuancing this wonderful prose.

Book 3 in Queen Emma’s saga is, I feel, the best of the three. The changes in political fortunes are fascinating. Emma, as conceived by the author, is riveting as a character. And Rachel Atkins’ narration is varied and just right in expression. As with Book 2, the research notes at the end give wonderful underpinnings to the creative choices of the author.

Enjoyed this novel, the fourth I’ve read by Ms Chadwick, and I would read another. There was a section toward the front that dealt extensively with William’s training and early career that was somewhat tedious. The romance with Isabel was beautifully wrought and very engaging. I was hoping to see a bit more interaction with Queen Eleanor as they were great friends and their friendship was a big part of Eleanor’s three books. Overall, the story was engaging and I especially enjoyed reading the historical notes at the end.

James Lee Burke is a bard in the Cannon of American letters, a wizard with imagery, a sage with philosophy for the ages, a true and best storyteller. Will Patton is a magician with voice and character. There is no one I’d rather listen to telling a story than him. The combination of the two creatives at the top of their craft is both stunning to experience and a source of joy to one who writes and reads fiction

The mystery held my interest. However, I was numerous times very frustrated about all the telling—would rather be shown via character action and interaction. And the ending was not at all satisfying, but only vague and unresolved.
Narrator did a good job.

She writes and narrates with as much wit, insight, and sarcasm—keeping things fun as well as educational— as she does on her never-to-be-missed tv show. I like story, and Rachel provides that in spades. If you only read or listen to one book this year, make it this one. It’ll blow your mind.

Dickens’s description of a storm at seaside is the best I’ve ever read. His antagonist is larger than life and demands the hero and his friends must be stronger and more wily to best him. No character is too inconsequential to be forgotten at the close of the story, leaving the reader entirely satisfied.

I enjoyed the parallel plot, the descriptions of settings, the rich emotions. The single downfall of this book is the author's repeated use of "as" in the middles of so many of the sentences; it's repetitive and thus irritating. Beyond that, however, the novel engaged me to the satisfying end.
