Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

Historia
Gaia is dying. That, at least, is what Dr. Lionel Scott believes. A renowned expert in tropical and infectious diseases, Scott has witnessed the devastating impact of illness and turmoil at critical scale. Society as it exists is untenable, and the direct link to Earth’s death spiral; population levels are out of control and people have allowed disarray and disorder to run rampant. While most are concerned about deadly disease, Scott knows that it is truly humanity itself that will destroy Gaia.

The suspense and pace of this book were riveting. Hard to put it down.
Revisado: 05-02-24
Sandford has never been better. This recaptures some of the excitement and suspense f the early Davenport novels. Stroke of genius to have Davenport and crew in the story but allowing Letty to be the focus. As much as anyone can enjoy a pandemic story in a post-pandemic world, this was so enjoyable and absolutely satisfying!

Historia
Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin, veterans now of many battles, return to the seas where they first sailed as shipmates. But, this is a longer, harder, colder war than the dashing frigate actions of their early days. When a sudden turn of events takes them off on a hazardous mission, they must depend on all of their seamanship skills and Jack's proverbial luck.

Love Aubrey-Maturin series but this narrator is awful
Revisado: 08-30-23
I want everyone to read O’Brian’s series, one of the most wonderful around. But this version of Ionian Mission is dreadfully narrated, rendering Aubrey a castigating bully instead of the warm-hearted character the author created. Yuck. Just read it instead

Excellent historical mystery!
Revisado: 12-29-17
These historical mysteries continue to entertain. The storylines and rich detail of virtually every description provide such an engaging vehicle for a murder mystery. And the characters continue to evolve in interesting ways. I will continue through the series and mourn when I reach the end. Excellent fiction!

Another great thriller!! Such good characters!
Revisado: 01-26-17
Harris keeps getting better and better. The characters we've come to know and love (or revile, as the case may be) continue to evolve in such intriguing ways. The plot and pacing is so taut, and filled with delicious twists and turns. This series is some of the best fiction around. I'm completely hooked and running to the next installment without delay.

Historia
LAPD cop Scott James is not doing so well, not since a shocking nighttime assault by unidentified men killed his partner, Stephanie, nearly killed him, and left him enraged, ashamed, and ready to explode. He is unfit for duty - until he meets his new partner. Maggie is not doing so well, either. The German shepherd survived three tours in Iraq and Afghanistan sniffing explosives before she lost her handler to an IED and sniper attack, and her PTSD is as bad as Scott’s. They are each other’s last chance.

Historia
The first storm comes from, of all places, the Minnesota zoo. Two large and very rare Amur tigers have vanished from their cage, and authorities are worried sick that they've been stolen for their body parts. Traditional Chinese medicine prizes those parts for home remedies, and people will do extreme things to get what they need. Some of them are a great deal more extreme than others - as Virgil is about to find out.

That #*%! Flowers Strikes Again! Love it!
Revisado: 10-24-16
if you've read any of the previous Virgil Flowers novels, you WILL need to read this one too. It follows the now-familiar formula that has made this character so likeable and pushes all the same gratifying buttons. If you haven't read a Flowers novel, what's keeping you? This is a good one to start with, though you can jump into any of them and still have a great adventure.

Great to revisit these past Harry Bosch adventures
Revisado: 01-19-16
Harry Bosch is such a well-developed character that he seems like a real person whose life and past novels we can revisit like scrapbook stories. And these 3 are some of the best. The narrows has Harry and agent Rachel Walling chasing The Poet through Las Vegas and LA. Echo Park is perhaps the most intricate and best of the Bosch novels; every police procedural should be this deep (the Amazon series "Bosch" only scratches the surface of this rich storyline). This is Harry at his best. The Overlook is also a great post 9/11 read and listen but, even to serious Bosch fan, Harry's almost maniacal distrust of the FBI gets to be too much in the Overlook, with Harry endangering a federal terrorism investigation just so he can control evidence and witnesses because he doesn't want to get closed out by the feds. It all gets downright irresponsible, but readers will still enjoy the ride. Connelly is just so good at his craft; no one can touch him. And BTW I just don't get the negative comments in some reviews about Len Carriou; I listen to lots of audiobooks and Len is one of the best. So even if you read these when first published, this collection will have you binge listening and feeling like you're riding shotgun with the famous detective Heironymous Bosch. And what a ride it is.
