Fascinating account
Revisado: 10-04-17
Fascinating weaving together of the story of American copper miners, Woody Guthrie's life and the early career of Bov Dylan.
Gave me an entirely new perspective to appreciate Woody Guthrie's lyrics from, and had me listening to Dylan's "Song to Woody" on repeat for days...
After setting the context of North American labour unions, Guthrie's struggles and Dylan's ambitions the chapter analysing the lyrics of "Like A Rolling Stone" alone makes the entire book worth purchasing and reading.

Funny and frank
Revisado: 10-03-17
Bruce Campbell's delivery of his life story is a real treat. His characterizations of the people who've played a part in his life make it really funny (does Sam Raimi really sound that bad?)
It's nice to hear about Hollywood from someone who's not on the A-list, who tells what it's like for the working stiffs in the film industry.
I also enjoyed his reading of the fan mail he's received over the years. Quite a laugh.
Made me go back and re-watch all the Evil Dead films (with a new appreciation for how they were made)

Easy to understand summary of world politics
Revisado: 09-23-16
What makes the book interesting is that it is a rather academic presentation of a subject in which the author is not merely an academic, but rather a practitioner who was at the heart of some of the decisions which shaped the geopolitical outcomes he describes in the book.
In that sense you almost get an "insider's" look into contemporary world politics from this book.
But it also brings a great deal of context to current world issues that are often presented by the media as issues of our time, whereas in reality they are the current states of issues that have been fluidly evolving in societies since the dawn of civilisation. Kissinger seeks to help people understand that history and broaden the context in which we ponder these issues.
The reading of the book is, like it's subject matter, straightforward and impassive, but pleasant enough to listen to for the duration of the book.

Absolutely brilliant performance
Revisado: 09-01-16
The story is wonderful - deep and engaging. Epic, but on a very personal level. The sights, sounds and tastes of Bombay are so vividly presented that it's made me desperate to travel there.
The reading by Humphrey Bower is one of the finest I've ever heard. The voices and characterizations are so unique and authentic that at times it sounds like there is a cast of twenty reading the book. Every single minute of this book is a delight to listen to.

Historia
In the vein of classic authors such as Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke, Nathan Arkwright is a seminal author of the 20th century. At the end of his life he becomes reclusive and cantankerous, refusing to appear before or interact with his legion of fans. Little does anyone know, Nathan is putting into motion his true timeless legacy. Convinced that humanity cannot survive on Earth, his Arkwright Foundation dedicates itself to creating a colony on an earthlike planet several light-years distant.

Simplistic storyline with way too much melodrama
Revisado: 04-12-16
The first part of the book is the only genuinely interesting bit: a fictional re-telling of science fiction writing and famous sci-fi authors during the golden age of the genre.
But then the long middle part of the book is a tedious melodrama throwing in every daytime soap opera cliche about troubled families.
It gets briefly interesting again when the author behind to imagine humans on a distant planet, but soon it's back to family dramas before a really hokey sentimental ending.
I didn't enjoy the narrator's reading of it either. Something about the pitch and tone of his voice grated me throughout, though I must admit that he mimicked the voices of the older characters really well.

Historia
Six days ago, astronaut Mark Watney became one of the first people to walk on Mars. Now, he's sure he'll be the first person to die there. After a dust storm nearly kills him and forces his crew to evacuate while thinking him dead, Mark finds himself stranded and completely alone with no way to even signal Earth that he's alive - and even if he could get word out, his supplies would be gone long before a rescue could arrive. Chances are, though, he won't have time to starve to death. The damaged machinery, unforgiving environment, or plainold "human error" are much more likely to kill him first.

One of the most exciting books I've read
Revisado: 06-02-15
Don't be put off by the title. This isn't a book about aliens. If you enjoyed the film, "Gravity", you'll love this story. And if you didn't enjoy that movie, read this book because it's way more exciting than that was anyway.
The book is crammed with an astonishing amount of facts, figures and calculations. But this doesn't make it tedious. Weir's meticulous attention to detail only serves to heighten the tension as each unfolding peril adds up to a truly gripping tale of one man's fight for survival.
The main character is perfect - you can't help rooting for him as his sardonic wit makes you chuckle and his limitless resourcefulness continues to astound you.
The narrator is excellent at conveying the lead character's intelligence and subtle wit, but he also did a great job of filling out the supporting characters with great vocalizations. Venkat Kapoor was a favourite of mine.
This is a great book. I've been telling everyone about it.
