Why does a grown man have feelings for a teen?
Revisado: 04-29-24
I’m normally very liberal with my five stars because I get really immersed in stories, this story was no different for the first while. It had a very “being the chosen one comes with consequences” vibe that I enjoy, as well as a theme of “even the kindest people can have darkness within them.
However, there’s a point where Rose (the main character) and her mentor have this weird flirtation thing going on and I was trying to rationalize that I misunderstood the ages and she was early 20s and he was late 20s which still would have felt weird to me but I can be a bit more forgiving about it. Then there was an entirely unnecessary DETAILED almost sex scene between the two of them, but then we find out that was just magic. And near the end he even states he isn’t interested because she is still a teen and they are at different points in their lives and his interest was only because of the magic, but then another character explains that couldn’t be true and it was an entire roller coaster of us this grown man interest in a girl almost a decade his junior or is he not.
There was also a theme of “it’s noble to sacrifice your child for the greater good but maybe not” with the main characters mom abandoning her, but then the main antagonist using his daughter as a pawn and I just was not impressed.
The voice actor was good though and I did finish it so take that how you will.

Interesting premise pour execution
Revisado: 06-20-23
There were a lot of things I liked about this story. I liked the mix of cultures, I liked the crossing storylines, but there were a lot of things I didn’t like. There were plot holes that didn’t make sense, like why people were fighting over the water rights when I think legally just holding the piece of paper wouldn’t give you ownership.
There were also a few things mentioned in the book that made me completely uncomfortable with how they were included. Overall I can see why someone would enjoy this book but it wasn’t something I enjoyed.

A Story I Needed
Revisado: 06-16-23
I am non-binary and this story made me tear up multiple times in such a healing way. It was great to see a story where the people around the main character were supportive but it didn’t assuage the fear that comes with coming out. There are so many times that Ana makes plans to tell people and those plans fall through, that is something I strongly identify with.

Within the black-and-white striped canvas tents is an utterly unique experience full of breathtaking amazements. It is called Le Cirque des Rêves, and it is only open at night. But behind the scenes, a fierce competition is underway - a duel between two young magicians, Celia and Marco, who have been trained since childhood expressly for this purpose by their mercurial instructors.

Very slow to start
Revisado: 06-15-23
It was a decent book and I can appreciate how the author interwove the story, however, it took me almost two months to finish it because I just wasn’t that invested. There were too many characters to keep track of and the pacing was a bit slow. Overall a good concept though.

Just as Fred is settling down in his new abode, he receives word that a favor is being called in, one he promised to a dangerously powerful member of otherworldly royalty. Bracing danger, adventure, and unknown threats, Fred is instead asked to take on an entirely different role than anticipated. Acting as interim professor at one of the few universities for supernatural entities, Fred will have to navigate a strange environment, eccentric coworkers, and unenthusiastic students. Yet that alone won't be enough, for this college has more history than the tales in its tomes.

Still great!
Revisado: 01-18-23
This particular book wasn’t as strong as some of the others in the series but it was still a delightful experience. I’m a huge fan of this series and actually finished it the day it was released to audible. As always the story is well thought out and has interconnected layers of information. The sectional set up of the story makes it easy to get invested from one adventure to the next and parts of the story are obviously laying solid groundwork for the next book. The one thing I personally didn’t like about this addition to the series was the way the students were handled. The ones I wanted more information on were left woefully undeveloped while the ones who received development had character archs that felt flat or a rushed. This series has a menagerie of main and side characters so it’s not surprising some of them get lost along the way but normally these books leave me excited for the next installment, this one left me with questions about characters we will probably never see again.
All that said it’s still my favorite series and I love the way Kirby Heyborne narrates it. It makes me feel like I really know these characters.

99% amazing
Revisado: 07-06-22
I love this book, loved the interweaving stories, loved how one story led into the next. There were very few things that I had issue with but I will say I was not a fan of the ending. Specifically, I wasn’t a fan of the fact that the main character doesn’t see his mother again from within the confines of the story. I know it’s implied but it just left me wanting for that part to be resolved.

Not my style
Revisado: 06-14-22
I was actually surprised when I figured out this book was written by a woman, mostly because very few of the women in this story have any depth of character. It seems as if every pretty woman is shallow and crazy, every kind woman is a motherly figure of some sort, and everyone else is ‘dower’.
Not to mention that the story it self was convoluted and confusing. I enjoy a good mystery but I didn’t like either of the main characters enough to slog through the second half of the book to find out what happened. It did not hold my attention and I personally don’t feel the mystery, which could have been really interesting, is worth putting up with the awful main characters.
Please just send them both to therapy away from each other.

Undecided on this story
Revisado: 06-01-22
The story was good, interesting for a super hero story, a little predictable. There are some issues brought up in the story I don’t feel qualified to speak on but one thing that did bother me was one character’s reaction to seeing another with a man, she acted as if it were a heinous crime and my immediate thought to the whole interaction was “bi people exist,” and it left a sour taste in my mouth for the rest of the story. Otherwise, it was decent.

I am a fan of every book I've read by Drew Hayes thus far. His stories have a fun and adventurous feel but there are also genuine heartwarming moments. It is entertaining to watch the characters develop and learn to trust each other.

Not for Me
Revisado: 01-03-21
I’m sure this is just personal preference, but I found the play rather boring. On top of that, although Flo Gibson is an amazing reader, I could tell who was speaking just by the change in voice, still the play was read directly as it is on the page. So conversations were constantly interrupted by the name of who was speaking. It took me out of the experience. I’m sure there are some people who would enjoy this, but it was not for me.
