Great character development, and fun personalities. I wish it weren’t so biased towards the monarchy style of government, though!!

Elucidating Historical Facts
Revisado: 02-26-25
I really enjoy being entertained by a fictional story while learning about historical facts in the time period in which it takes place.
I’ve enjoyed this series in sequence and have been disappointed in the change of a narrator from Davina Porter, who was excellent and the voice of these characters in the first 15 books or so and then shifted to a voice I associate with the Sherlock Holmes series by Laurie King , and now to yet another narrator who has a much different voice yet for these well known characters. I would like to suggest to the author to stick with one narrator as the voice of her characters as they get associated with that voice in the mind of the reader. I also miss having the historical notes in the epilogue by the author.

Historia
March, 1815. The Bourbon King Louis XVIII has been restored to the throne of France, Napoleon is in exile on the isle of Elba, and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, and his wife, Hero, have traveled to Paris in hopes of tracing his long-lost mother, Sophie, the errant Countess of Hendon. But his search ends in tragedy when he comes upon the dying Countess in the wasteland at the tip of the Île de la Cité. Stabbed—apparently with a stiletto—and thrown from the bastions of the island's ancient stone bridge, Sophie dies without naming her murderer.

What an entertaining way to refresh one’s history lessons!!
Revisado: 02-09-25
I missed Davina Porter’s narration as I had to get used to Jenny Sterlin’s characterization of these well known characters in this 18th book in this series. Also deeply missed were the authors historical notes, separating fact from fiction that I always look forward to in the end.
Sebastian sounded like Sterlin’s wonderfully narrated Sherlock Holmes character in Lauri Kings series. So my plea to you Ms, Harris- is don’t switch horses mid stream, Sterlin is a talented narrator, but I had to adjust to the familiar characters unusual voices, and it was disturbing. And PLEASE always include your historical notes at the end!!!

Historia
It's October 1814. London suddenly finds itself in the grip of a series of heinous murders eerily similar to the Ratcliffe Highway murders of three years before. In 1811, two entire families were viciously murdered in their homes. A suspect - a young seaman named John Williams - was arrested. But before he could be brought to trial, Williams hanged himself in his cell. The murders ceased. But when the lead investigator is killed in the same brutal way three years later and others possibly connected to the original case meet violent ends, the city is paralyzed with terror once more.

Historical fiction can illuminate current times is such a way as to be terrifying.
Revisado: 02-07-25
As I write this in Jan. 2025, a dictator (or king) wanna-be has taken over the U.S.
If he is allowed to continue his reign of terror, we will be right back in the social tragedy of 1800’s England!!!
The patriarchy is rearing its ugly head once again and if we don’t pay attention to our historical roots, we will once again be a people with no middle class, with oligarchs in charge (Musk) and a tyrant trying to conquer the world- again!!!
love how the author creates her stories based on real characters she researches from actual historical accounts. I’m always amazed to hear how her fictional characters were developed from real life at the end or epilogue of the book.
In previewing the next in series, I am very disappointed Ted that Devina Porter is no longer narrating this series. She was spectacular! Although I enjoyed Jenny Sterlin’s narration of Lauri R Kings books, I’m not sure she’s right for this series, Devina was perfect, and these characters won’t be the same without her.
Ms. Harris, I hope you take note, and never switch narrators in the middle of a series again!!!

It's 1811, and the threat of revolution haunts the upper classes of King George III's England. Then a beautiful young woman is found savagely murdered on the altar steps of an ancient church near Westminster Abbey. A dueling pistol found at the scene and the damning testimony of a witness both point to one man - Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, a brilliant young nobleman shattered by his experience in the Napoleonic Wars.

The day after a Gothic door is returned to its original place in the Mottisham village church, two men are found dead. The Welsh villagers, closed and suspicious of outsiders, believe their deaths were not accidental, but part of an ancient legend that told of an unrepentant monk who tried to enter to the church by grasping the door's iron knocker.

The death of unpopular Herbert Terrell seems accidental - although this expert mountain climber plunged off a mere hill in Czechoslovakia. The saddest part of the tragedy is that no one cares, not his ex-wife, his step daughter Tossa at Oxford, or his colleagues at a British scientific institute...until Tossa is shocked into emotion by a mysterious note suggesting Terrell was murdered.
