Sayers is quite the conversationalist. The way people are limned by their choice of words is eye-opening. The descriptions of people are almost all made by the characters. The omniscient narrator devotes her attention to sketching the scenes: the books, the baby grand piano, the cushions.

Are the plots quite contrived? Sure. But don’t hold that against Sayers. It’s the scene-setting that makes the show.

Blandings does not disappoint, even bereft of its Empress. Lord Emsworth is at this point in his 50’s besotted with flowers, yew alleys and the like, rather than with a pig. His querulous striving for peace and tranquility is, even at this early (1923) appearance, a lodestone of his existence.

The penultimate chapter! Here we are able to revel in the beautiful pronunciation of “cognoscenti,” as expertly rendered by the narrator. Listen for it!

(It makes the lack of “six pennurth” of rice okay…)

The narrator is earnest, which is nice. I rather wish she had looked up the pronunciation of certain words first:
- waistcoat is pronounced “WESSt-kit”
- blancmange is “bluh-MAHNJH” - no hard c. French, you see.

Watching a season of Monty Python and a season of Downton would be good preparation for a narrator planning to read Wodehouse (or Sayers, or Christie) aloud.

Only the pronunciation of that port city in southern England: the accent is on the second syllable.

The narrator has been working on her pronunciation of English place-names. Not every word of Wodehouse’s considerable vocabulary is familiar to her, but that’s to be expected.

“Wimbledon” is now pronounced with a d, not a t; however “tuppence” is sadly voiced as “two pence” and not as it is spelled, “tuh-pence.” The odd, singsong delivery continues, with subordinate clauses ending in a lift rather than a downward note.

Vintage Pelham Grenville. The characters are likable enough and the stakes low enough to avoid any heart-rending turmoil. The narrator has a nice clear educated diction that is pleasing to listen to.

The lower-class accent of the narrator was jarring to listen to. His mispronunciation of words like “damask” (he called it “dah-MAHSK” rather than “DAM-usk”) and several other terms betrayed his low upbringing.

i am fairly sure that Mr. Wilde would not have been pleased.
