Historia
Outside the island there is nothing: the world destroyed by a fog that swept the planet, killing anyone it touched. On the island: it is idyllic. 122 villagers and 3 scientists, living in peaceful harmony. The villagers are content to fish, farm and feast, to obey their nightly curfew, to do what they’re told by the scientists. Until, to the horror of the islanders, one of their beloved scientists is found brutally stabbed to death. And they learn the murder has triggered a lowering of the security system around the island, the only thing that was keeping the fog at bay.

No likeable characters. Confusing mystery. Loved his last two books. Not this one. Will buy his next book.

Historia
Rachel's boyfriend Frank is different from other people. His strangeness is part of what she loves about him: his innocence, his intelligence, his passionate immersion in the music of JS Bach. As a coder, Frank sees patterns in everything, but as his theories slide further towards the irrational, Rachel becomes increasingly concerned for his wellbeing. There are people Frank knows online, people who share his view of the world and who insist he has a unique role to play. In spite of Rachel's fears for his safety, Frank is determined to meet them face to face.

Well written, detailed research, and some lovely turns of phrase, but just not for me. I don't mind slow stories, but the slow climax here was quite underwhelming.

Testicle choice of narrator
Revisado: 09-23-23
Worst English accent I've ever heard. Has he ever heard one? Doesn't sound like it.
Other than that, mostly fun time travel story, although far from outstanding

Historia
Amahle is a Light Chaser—one of a number of explorers who travel the universe alone (except for their onboard AI), trading trinkets for life stories. But when she listens to the stories sent down through the ages, she hears the same voice talking directly to her from different times and on different worlds. She comes to understand that something terrible is happening, and only she is in a position to do anything about it. And it will cost everything to put it right.

Wrong choice of Narrator
Revisado: 06-25-23
Narrator seemed to think she was reading a comedy. Hardly a performance for 'transcendent love'. Only thing she was missing is a few drum/cymbal riffs.

Machiavellian?
Revisado: 04-06-23
Was hoping for clever political intrigue etc. and got something very far from that. This is not Machiavellian or even particularly clever, intricate, or detailed. Just an average story with unmemorable characters.
Decent narrator but everything else mediocre.

Worst book by this author
Revisado: 03-31-23
Liked the series. Great author. This book dragged though.
Spent many, many hours waiting for a payoff. At one point, despite the dull buildup (in this book of the series), it looked to be building nicely towards a dramatic conclusion, only for a shocking last last few hours.
The editor should have just refused to publish this. Strangely bad. Needs a rewrite.
Save yourself a huge amount of time, and get the significantly shorter and infinitely better Eversion, by the same author, instead.

Creation better than Execution
Revisado: 09-01-21
Doesn't work for me.
Don't like this but won't return, as the author deserves my money for the idea alone.
I really like the interactive nature of this book's creation. It must have been great fun for those involved, and for that alone the author deserves my money.
Problem is, listening to a line by line description of how forum member Sarah J and Bob P solved a puzzle by watching a 3 hour video, pausing at the appropriate moment, is just not interesting. Especially when this sort of description happens over and over again.
Even on high speed I just couldn't take it any more. I had to stop.
DNF but respect to the author regardless.

Trash
Revisado: 06-29-21
If you've never read Feist, don't start here (better off never even starting this).
Cringe worthy and excessive focus on sex. All women are either memories (dead relatives), or there purely to sleep with the main character.
Boring, formulaic unimaginative revenge story. Wooden main character. All others unlikeable.
Feist's first two trilogies are amongst my favourite fantasy novels ever. This is absolute trash. Don't bother

When does the plot start?
Revisado: 08-19-19
Returning this book as around 10 hours in, the only thing that's happened is a never ending series of duels, along with Corin practising to increase his mana (or whatever it is).. Even with narration increased beyond race-caller speed I just can't take it any more.
The prospect of a longer version of (something like) book 1 sounded good. Unfortunately this isn't like book 1. It's a book about a level-up grind, without the interesting bits to go with it.
1 Star and returned for something less painful.
