I have loved this series, but holy cow this one was emotional. Few writers have the bravery to kill important characters, but Zimny has forged ahead and made the series all that much better for it. It is heart breaking, but creates a story that has more than surface interest. There is a depth to her characters that makes me want to learn more about them as their stories slowly come to light.

I was so pleasantly surprised by this series. If you are a big Drew Hayes or Peter Clines fan this is right up your alley. M T Zimny has the character and world building of Hayes, and the plot twists and turns of Clines, in other words she sucks you in, makes you care, then leaves you day dreaming & wanting more! it's deliciously torturous.
It's definitely a YA fiction as it's very clean both in language and sexual references (clean meaning they are non existent), which I appreciated. As such, some aspects of the main character (Sammy) are typical of YA fiction with themes of jealousy and snap decisions, but they are fitting with her age as a Sophomore in HS. all that being said, the twists in the book are actually quite surprising, and I'm still waiting for the other shoe to drop. I can't actually say what's going to happen next, which makes me want to read more!!
Character development of not only our heroin, but of the other characters, is good and there are a lot of ways the story can build.
World building starts from the very beginning and only gets better as you go.
All in all it's a great fantasy read (or listen) for both teens and adults.

Apparently everyone in this novel is expected to be a mind reader. Not once is Persephone informed of any of Adams inner monologue either directly or indirectly. for example he could have told his buddy about thinking she was too pretty, who then could have informed Persephone. or perhaps Mr Jones could have told her that that was why he was fired. Perhaps Adam could have informed her if his nightmare at some point and that was why he "called her" ridiculous. But no. Persephone is never in formed but has to guess at all of his feelings and thoughts. What a terrible love interest for young women to aspire to. A man with no communication skills with his family, friends, or wife. At least in beauty and the beast there were kind candle sticks and clocks to let her know that she was welcome and eagerly loved. Persephone is just plopped down in an actually hellish relationship with no clue about his inner workings and no one to help her understand him or their home. Also did Adam forget that the point of getting a wife was to produce an heir? So why was he pushing her away without sealing the deal? plot hole after plot hole. But it was easy to read and fun, I just wouldn't give this one to my daughter.

I started listening because I ran into a motivational slump while starting my business. It sincerely helped me remember that even if I have to stop my pursuit to "forage" or "heal wounds", that progress is progress. I also have worked so hard and have not yet considered that the cavern may be empty. it was a great story, short listening and not a solution-fits-all approach. My thanks to the author for giving me a lot to think about.

it's an entertaining book with a good story that keeps you wanting more. I had read the hard copy of the book and enjoyed it.
I used audible to listen to it and was not impressed by the performance of the narrator and I felt it took away from emotions that the book had in mind.

look, I know that the characters in this story are based on real people, but a romance set in a concentration camp just struck a me as quite terrible. It gave me anxiety Every time they were alone together, and the romance scenes felt inappropriate somehow. I also hated the way that the guard was seen as ruthless, but trustworthy at times(???)....idk it just felt off balance to me.

It's a decent story, but my heavens, it goes on and on without a real purpose. The ghosts get creepy toward the end, but why they should suddenly start killing only in the last bit doesn't make sense. I also feel like Francis and her daughter are a little unexplained. are there rules to being a sea creature? do the ghosts only haunt the sea creatures that live out of the water? in what way did Haddie and the SIL protect her? Was she even in danger considering the ghosts only killed the humans? what was the point!?

this was a truly insightful story that moves me to not only support brain donation, but also to support organizations that are doing the research to help those with CTE.
my only complaint is that sometimes the dramatic background noises make it difficult to concentrate on what they are saying and can grate on my nerves... thankfully they are temporary and fade out within the first 5-10 minutes

ugh, how many times can he "slip inside her"? yuck. This book romanticizes abusive, narcissistic relationships. The bones of the story are good, but their relationship dynamic is awful.
