Historia
When it comes to setting and meeting goals, we may see - quite literally - our plans, our progress, and our potential in the wrong ways. We perceive ourselves as being closer to or further from the end than we may actually be depending on our frame of reference. We handicap ourselves by looking too often at the big picture and at other times too long at the fine detail. But as award-winning social psychologist Emily Balcetis explains, there is great power in these misperceptions. We can learn to leverage perceptual illusions if we know when and how to use them to our advantage

Unlistenable
Revisado: 07-19-23
Heard her on the "Hidden Brain" podcast and was sufficiently intrigued to buy the audiobook. What a mistake! She either needed to let someone else narrate this or edit down the content. In fact, maybe BOTH. The cute little anecdotes are way more than is needed to convey the information. And her attempts at humor fall flat with excess wordiness.

From legendary historian Adam Hochschild, a groundbreaking reassessment of the overlooked but startlingly resonant period between World War I and the Roaring Twenties, when the foundations of American democracy were threated by war, pandemic, and violence fueled by battles over race, immigration, and the rights of labor

Should be Required Reading Today
Revisado: 03-20-23
Imagine violent racial strife, grotesque income inequality, arbitrary book bans, and more problems in American society and you might think these are confined to recent years. However, as this excellent history illustrates, we've "been there and done that" already, just over a century ago. Can America learn from its troubled history and avoid repeating grievous errors that killed many citizens and cost many more their livelihoods and reputations? Only if a book like this becomes required reading for all.

Historia
In Evicted, Princeton sociologist and MacArthur “Genius” Matthew Desmond follows eight families in Milwaukee as they each struggle to keep a roof over their heads. Hailed as “wrenching and revelatory” (The Nation), “vivid and unsettling” (New York Review of Books), Evicted transforms our understanding of poverty and economic exploitation while providing fresh ideas for solving one of twenty-first-century America’s most devastating problems. Its unforgettable scenes of hope and loss remind us of the centrality of home, without which nothing else is possible.
