A beautiful conclusion to an equally wonderful and harrowing series. I can’t believe she toyed with my emotions like that. I think I bawled from chapter 40 onwards. Melissa Blair I’m sending you my therapy bill, cuz I don’t know if I’ll ever emotionally recover from this. 5 stars a 10/10 would recommend.

This is one of the most confounding books I’ve ever had the displeasure of completing. One I don’t know if the author meant for it to seem as though the main character wrote the book, or if the main character is a self insert, but the Main character and the author share the same name. Second the book actually has an halfway decent premise. It’s somewhat akin to a fantasy hunger games. Instead of it being a bunch of kids fighting each other for one victor to emerge from the arena, they’ve enslaved all of the magical creatures of this world and forced them to be the armies of the few competitors who are trying to emerge leaving the survivors in their armies to get assigned to the next year’s competition. Interesting concept I’ll admit, but what really kills it for me is the main character. It’s in his POV and let me just tell you what. The man thinks very highly of himself. From how honorable, just, chivalrous, and brave he is to his endowment and prowess in bed. The latter being way too prevalent. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a smut girlie. I almost exclusively read novels with varying amounts of spice in them, but almost always some spice. But the main character has been written to be more enticing than Casanova himself. Every woman that he comes in contact with that has, in his words, flowered, drops their panties for him. In the first three chapters he sleeps with three women, two of which are at the same time. He gets to the capital and has sex with an entire haram of women, then without even sleeping goes and sleeps with another woman. He gets into the game and the woman who hate his guts for slaughtering her people literally turns on a dime and oaths her soul to him literally kisses his boots and starts calling him master. He makes it seem as if this isn’t something he enjoys but he talks about it too much for that to come off as genuine. All the women remark on how “they’ve never met a man like him before”, or “I’d didn’t know men could be like you”. But he’s humble enough to say that there’s plenty of men like him out there. I surely hope not, ew. The fight scenes are interesting even captivating at times, but it literally always ends with him sleeping with one to four women at a time. It’s the most self flagellating story I’ve ever wasted my life to listen to. Honestly I’m mad it took me so long to get to actually reading it cuz I’d return it if it hadn’t. Definitely will not be finishing the other two novels.

The books is amazing a beautiful conclusion to this series. We’ve been to hell and back with our girl Aelin and this is such a bittersweet feeling bringing it to a close. However I am going to complain about the narration. I own this entire series both physically and on audible. I really enjoy being able to listen to my favorite books while traveling or in situations where I wouldn’t want my books to be in, like at the beach. But this series narration drives me crazy. I wish I had seen a review about it before I bought it. She REGULARLY mis pronounces words, and uses the wrong pronunciation of homonyms. It takes me out of the story immediately. Especially at this point in the story where the entire book is very intense and you’re super invested in the story it sucks having such an easy directorial instruction during the production ruin the immersion. I enjoy her voice and how she narrated the characters, but the mispronunciations were really enough to ruin the experience for me.

Very nostalgic audiobook. Jim Dale’s reading of the books were the first medium I experienced the books. His pronunciation of a couple of the characters bother me, and his Hermione voice is grating at times, but all in all a stellar performance.
