Historia
With ailing family to support, Evie Sage's employment status isn't just important, it's vital. So when a mishap with Rennedawn's most infamous Villain results in a job offer—naturally, she says yes. No job is perfect, of course, but even less so when you develop a teeny crush on your terrifying, temperamental, and undeniably hot boss. Don't find evil so attractive, Evie. But just when she's getting used to severed heads suspended from the ceiling and the odd squish of an errant eyeball beneath her heel, Evie suspects this dungeon has a huge rat . . . and not just the literal kind.

more yikes than wow
Revisado: 02-14-25
While I am a fan of romantacy, I found the writing style and wording choices to be cringe and off putting. I did not want to hear more one time about how either of the main characters was undone, ruined, or completely destroyed. The narrator didn't help with this problem, given her halting way of speaking and strange enunciation. It added to the awkwardness. Lastly, the book pulled a major no no for me, which is ending the story abruptly with no closure. It’s fine to wrap up a few things and then leave a few things unresolved to encourage folks to read the next in the series. But this wasn’t that. It just ended with nothing wrapped up or resolved. It felt like a dirty move to get me to buy the sequel, which I won’t do as it would probably end the same way.

decent story but narration for audiobook was very
Revisado: 12-04-24
I read the audiobook, and overall I felt the story was good. Not great, but definitely a decent cozy romantasy story. However, the narrator had a way of speaking where he added pauses and stress in the weirdest places. His intonation was also quite strange. Usually when listening to an audiobook, even if the narrator is a bit off-putting to start, I acclimate as the book goes on and stop noticing it. In this case, it was distracting and off-putting until the very end and took away from my enjoyment of the book.
I have never listened to this narrator before, so I don't know if it was his personal style or just a result of the direction he was given. Perhaps they thought this style lent itself to cozy fantasy, but I can't agree. I can't imagine being happy with the end result.
It's possible, the story was actually great, but my unhappiness with the narration colored my assessment. If you're looking for a cozy romantasy story, go ahead and pick this up, but don't get the audiobook.
